OFFICIAL RELEASE: Casey Noonan won the 40-lap 19th Annual Barney Oldfield UMP Late Model Feature at Oakshade Raceway on Saturday night. An outstanding field of drivers, including NHRA drag racer Cruz Pedregon, was on hand to compete for the coveted Oakshade Raceway Barney Oldfield Trophy. Unfortunately the competition proved to be too stiff as Pedregon failed to make it in to the feature. Kevin Reeve started on the outside of the front row after winning his heat event earlier in the night and snatched the early lead from pole sitter Mike Bores. Defending Barney Oldfield Race Champion Ronnie Perrine Jr. from Lima Ohio pressured Reeve for the lead during the first quarter of the race. The first yellow flag flew on lap 11 after Ky Harpers car rolled to a stop in turn two. Mike Bores, Mike Miller and last weeks feature winner Bill Hahn all piled up on the ensuing restart to bring out a second caution. Casey Noonan started ninth and worked his way up to take the lead from Reeve at the midway point of the race and then pulled away from the rest of the field. Rusty Schlenk worked his way up to second and began to reel in the race leader but didn’t have enough laps to close the distance on Noonan.

Noonan went on to a convincing win picking up the check totaling $4400 for winning the 19th Annual Barney Oldfield Race. Former UMP Late Model Track Champion Rusty Schlenk finished second with Kevin Reeve slipped back to third. Last years Barney Oldfield winner Ronnie Perrine Jr. finished fourth with Dusty Moore fifth.

Oakshade Raceway is about three and a half hours and 175 miles from my home base near Wayne County Speedway, but I have never been disappointed with any race I have seen at this Northwestern Ohio clay oval. Always multi grooved with excellent track preparations, dust and single lane is never a thought. Plus there is certainly no shortage of talent in this region, many nationally known and always a few up and coming stars.
On this trip I got to see straight line fast and funny car guy Cruz Pedregon turn some very good circle laps in a
dirt car, although he didn't make this show I think he'll be ready for 'em at next years prelude. Worth the trip and then some was to see Casey Noonan score his career biggest win to date and add his name to a prestigious list of
"Barney Race" winners. I was at Oakshade when he turned his very first laps and it's very cool to see what a great driver he has become. It was hard trying to get a short interview out of Casey after the races, with only four feature wins under his belt this is something still new for him, plus all the excitement and all the fans driving past his pit spot honking and cheering it was a very special time for Casey and his team. I had hoped to see a few more WCS teams make the tow but with fuel prices I guess I understand. Even if he didn't make the show, a tip of the hat to George Lee for turning in some impressive laps. His team is doing a little traveling and this can only make him a better driver in preparation for the next step up. Kris Patterson was in action this Saturday night, this cat always gives race fans a great show and one of the reasons I make the trip. Patterson and Zack Olger raced nose to nose their entire heat with Olger just edging the famed # 0 Ford at the line for the win - good stuff!
There were 39 Late Models on hand, every one top quality. Plus Sportsman Late Models and some very unique "Bombers" filled the pits although several people commented how car count has been down because of the economy. The 40 lap Late Model feature was completed just after 10:00 and I was on the road by 10:30.

Of the six Late Model events held at Oakshade this year there has been six different winners.
Two time Oakshade Late Model champ Rusty Schlenk opened the season with a win followed
by the May 17th win for Dusty Moore. Returning to his home track Matt Miller scored the next
30 lap special sanctioned by ALMS while Bill Hahn captured last weeks feature on June 7.
The big one so far this season goes to Casey Noonan for winning the Barney Oldfield Memorial.
