Brandon Morrow winds down after hot laps, fast enough to make the show and represent the Wayne / Holmes racing community.

Wayne County Speedway, my home track, used to be a weekly destination but is now merely a starting point as I head south on a one hundred mile drive to catch some incredible down home style racing action. I'll begin by saying THANKS to all the competitors for making the tow and providing us fans with such a great show.

When I first walked across the track it looked very dry considering all the rain during the week, but then I noticed water actually bubbling out of the ground infield I knew right away whats visible on the surface can be very misleading and dust wasn't going to be the problem tonight. Almost immediately during hot laps the track began to bust apart as track owner Ted Johnson focused his attention to the growing problem, but so goes spring time dirt track racing and it certainly could have been worse. With something under a hundred race cars on hand hot laps started right on time and qualifying fired off at a rapid pace, damn it felt good standing outside of turn four dodging clay bullets thrown from oversize Hoosier treads. Heat races were just a tease to the action that would soon follow as Andy Bond made the pass on Dan Shrigley for the lead, then held off Chris Garnes for the first win. Tracey Fritter put the move on Freddie Carpenter in the second Late Model heat and checkered while Limited Late heats went to hard chargers Terry Hinkle and Larry Holbrook.Tonight was all about Modifeds and the Dash lined up polesitter Ryan Mayle with Brandon Morrow to the outside, Jesse Wisecarver, Larry Holbrook, Jess Hartman, and Kenny Johnson in that order and Mayle held his point for the win. The first heat went to Aukland, Robin Dustin came from 4th to win the second heat Rob Stambaugh scored the third. After suffering a flat tire during his heat, Stormin' Norm Aronhalt lived up to his nick name as he scraped the gaurd rails clean on a high side charge from tail to lead and scoring the consy win. Andy Parks and Tom Adkins raced door to door - flag to flag in the Mini Stock heat for a not so EZ 1 victory by Parks, a margin of only inches at the line. After all the preliminaries time was taken to give the track a good scrape in preparation for the main events.

Eighteen of the finest dirt Modifeds rolled onto the track headed up by Ryan Mayle and Jesse Wisecarver but soon after the start a yellow waved spelling trouble for many as Jeremy Blake, Kevin Morehouse, Rick Aukland and Brandon Morrow were nowl parked infield and done for the night. Soon the action resumed with 3 wide battles everywhere including Sam Lovejoy, Jeremy Berwanger, and Roy Roush charging from midpack and an amazing nose to nose to nose battle between Jesse Wisecarver, Kenny Johnson, and Jess Hartman all fighting for third.
The battle up front just as intense, Holbrook attempts to take the lead from Mayle just as a second yellow waves some order back into the field. The 48 of Mayle was consistently fast all night but the number L19 of Holbrook was getting stronger with every lap completed, , back to green and with the race drawing near the end these two worked the track high and low swapping the lead before Holbrook made it stick low in turn four and completed the pass with little time to spare. Ryan Mayle had to settle for second followed by Johnson, Hartman, and Wisecarver the
top five. Hard charger goes to Norm Aronhalt, out of the 'B', then from a sixteenth start to finish eighth in the main.

Flat out, Jesse Wisecarver, Kenny Johnson, and Jess Hartman

Aronhalt passes Berwanger for a top ten

The pass for the Win !

After taking the checkers Holbrook dashed pitside and reappeared moments later strapped into his Limited late Model. After a brief battle with Terry Hinkle, Holbrook had this feature all but sewed up when a drive shaft twisted any chances of scoring a double on the night. The LT 2 driven by Hinkle then had clear sailing for a victory. Super Late Models followed with immediate scrambles and skirmishes for position, Tracey Fritter got the jump on Andy Bond for the lead while Freddie Carpenter tried the same on Chris Garnes but without success. A few cautions slowed the pace but Garnes had it set on high and took the lead from Fritter before half way while Jared Hawkins takes third ahead of Bond and Carpenter. A nasty crash occured on the front stretch as Hawkins got the inside line on Fritter, drifting high with sparks flying as Fritter grinds to a snails pace causing the remaining field to check up and smash into each other. Taking the hardest hit, Andy Bonds night was done along with Rick Aukland and Sam Lovejoy. The final laps saw Garnes firmly in control with Fritter still in the hunt but losing ground fast, at the end it was Garnes, Hawkins, Carpenter, Dan Shrigley, and Weston Hutcheson the top five.

With a long drive ahead of me, I missed most of the Mini Stock feature and all of the Pure Stocks, congratulations to Andy Parks and Tim Skelton on your feature wins. My punishmnent for leaving early was to find Tee Jayes in Zanesville closed early on a Sunday night. All racing was completed by 10:30 and this night was dedicated to Justin Corder who will soon be leaving for a term in Iraq and serve our great Country well. There is plenty of room for more race fans to experience some of the best racing Ohio has to offer, and to the friendly staff at Midway Speedway, thanks for a great night of racing. I hope to return for the Jim Dunn Memorial on July 6.
