Shaver Dominates West Virginia Motor Speedway's 'RaceFest'

Mineral Wells, WV — Steve Shaver turned West Virginia Motor Speedway's 'RaceFest World Championships' into the 'ShaverFest.' The veteran driver from Vienna, W.Va., put together an unforgettable weekend at his reopened home track, completing a sweep of the 'RaceFest' doubleheader with a convincing victory in Sunday night's 40-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main. Shaver, 46, dominated on the eve of Memorial Day, charging off the outside-pole starting spot to lead the entire distance in the K&L Rumley Motorsports Rocket No. 6. He raced virtually unchallenged to the $10,125 victory, which gave him a two-night earnings total of $18,200. "Coming here this weekend I was kind of hoping for a couple of top fives, maybe a win if everything went right," said Shaver, who had one career WoO LMS triumph before going two-for-two at the sprawling five-eighths-mile oval that sits just 10 miles from his home. "To get a win in both of them, set fast time (on Sunday night) and win two heats – I can't quit smiling." Shaver built a lead that ballooned to as much as three-quarters of a straightaway before crossing the finish line about a dozen car lengths ahead of Zanesville, Ohio's Bart Hartman, who steered his Rocket car forward from the 12th starting spot to record a runner-up finish for the second consecutive night. Hartman lost Saturday evening's 30-lap A-Main when he was overtaken by Shaver in lapped traffic with only five laps remaining.

Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., relinquished second place to Hartman on lap 36 but held on to finish third in the RSD Enterprises Rocket, making him the highest-finishing WoO LMS regular in the opening event of the LaCrosse Extreme Tough Challenge. The unique mini-series awards points to the top-five fulltime WoO LMS and Sprint Car Series drivers in 16 selected events – eight Late Model and eight Sprint Car – and will earn the champion of the combined standings a $5,000 bonus from a $15,000 points fund.
Filling out the remainder of the top five was third-starter Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., who was in the battle for second place until backing off late in the distance due to an overheating engine in his Valvoline Rocket car, and polesitter Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio, in his MasterSbilt mount.

Shaver was simply the class of the field in the 'RaceFest' finale. He survived caution flags on laps 13 (after Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., suffered suspension woes and slapped the turn two wall while running 10th) and 16 (for a turn-four tangle involving Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., and Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa) en route to joining Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., as the only repeat winners in 16 WoO LMS A-Mains this season. "Kevin (Rumley) made some changes to the car today and it actually got better," acknowledged Shaver, who joined the venerable Greenville, N.C.-based K&L Rumley team at the start of the 2010 campaign. "I didn't think it could be much better than last night, but it was. It just felt so easy out there. The only problem I had was that I really didn't know where I needed to be on the track, so every now and then I tried to search around and see where the car felt best. I finally felt like I had the right line so I just stayed right there. I thought, If I'm gonna get beat, somebody's gonna have to pass me fair and square."

Hartman, 41, never got close enough to even attempt to turn the tables on Shaver. He had to make up too much ground after falling from a battle for second to a fourth-place finish on the final lap of his heat race. "We had an MSD problem at the end of the heat that caused the motor to drop a cylinder," said Hartman. "That knocked us from possibly redrawing for the (first three rows in the) feature to starting 12th – and you can't start 12th and expect to win against the caliber of cars that were here. We had a real good car again and moved up, so we're happy. Steve's been real good down here all weekend and deserved to win."

The 34-year-old Clanton, meanwhile, drove to his third-place finish using an experimental aluminum big-block engine built by Russell Baker that he borrowed from Tim Logan, who serves as Francis's crew chief and fields a car that Francis runs in selected non-Outlaw events. The 502 cubic inch behemoth worked well for Clanton. "It was pretty good," Clanton said of the powerplant. "It just needs a little work to race with these guys. Once we got racing, those 'little' motors could accelerate in the cushion a little bit better than I could.
"That (big-block) motor is just so hard to drive. It's got so much power and the throttle response is there, but when you gotta go easy out there – like (Shaver) was – then it can be a little lazy. That's something we can work on and get better, though."

Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while Richards placed a quiet 11th, tightening the WoO LMS points standings slightly. Richards left WVMS leading the battle by 46 points over McCreadie, who started 21 st after being forced to the B-Main by a blown right-rear tire during his heat, and 52 over Lanigan. Finishing in positions 8-10 was Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., who also used an aluminum big-block engine in both weekend events; Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., who ran in the top five early but still held on to earn the $500 WoO LMS 'Bonus Bucks' cash for being the highest-finishing driver who hasn't won a tour A-Main and isn't ranked among the top 12 in the points standings; and Davey Johnson of Latrobe, Pa.

A field of 33 cars assembled for the event, which was run on another summer-like evening. Temperatures soared into the 90s during the afternoon. Shaver was fastest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 19.541 seconds. Heat winners were Shaver, Francis and Eckert, and Richards captured the B-Main after failing to qualify through a heat for the first time in 2010. Brady Smith and Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., were forced to run backup cars after each crashed hard into the wall between turns three and four during their time-trial runs. Smith said he had some back soreness but was otherwise uninjured, while Hubbard reported no ill effects after absorbing what he called the hardest hit of his young career.

Hometown Hero: Shaver Wins Four-Car Battle Royale On Opening Night Of 'Race Fest' At West Virginia Motor Speedway

Mineral Wells, WV By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

Steve Shaver was a Hometown Hero on Saturday night at West Virginia Motor Speedway. Racing in front of a legion of family members and friends at a track just 10 miles from his home in Vienna, W.Va., Shaver came out on top of a titanic four-car duel to win the 30-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main that opened the five-eighths-mile oval's two-day 'RaceFest World Championships.' Shaver, 46, snuck by Bart Hartman of Zanesville, Ohio, for the lead on lap 25 and spent the remainder of the distance holding off Hartman, Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., to pocket
$8,075.

There was plenty for Shaver to smile about after the event, which brought WVMS back into the national spotlight after two years of inactivity. Not only did he win at the track he lists as his favorite for the first time in years, he also scored his initial victory since taking over as the driver of the Greenville, N.C.-based K&L Rumley Motorsports Rocket No. 6 earlier this year. "It's been a long time since we've won down here so it feels great," said Shaver, who registered his second career
win on the WoO LMS. "But more than anything, I'm just so happy to get a win for the Rumleys (Kevin and Lee Roy). I've raced against them for years and I've always really respected them, so it's been a real pleasurable experience to get a chance to drive for them."

Hartman settled for a second-place finish in his Rocket car, a couple car lengths behind Shaver at the checkered flag. The race's polesitter inherited the lead when early pacesetter Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., slowed with a flat left-rear tire on lap 10 but couldn't beat back Shaver's challenge. The eighth-starting McCreadie finished third in the Sweeteners Plus Rocket and third-starter Frank placed fourth in his Corry Rubber Rocket after both drivers made bids for the lead in the closing laps. Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., improved one spot from his starting position to complete the top five in the RSD Enterprises Rocket.

Shaver, who started fourth in a car that carries a Chevy engine built by team co-owner Lee Roy Rumley, seized an opening in lapped traffic to steal the lead from Hartman with an inside move through turns one and two on lap 25. He had erased Hartman's half-straightaway edge to put himself in position to slide in front. "Before that one caution (on lap 10 for Lanigan) I actually got underneath Bart," said Shaver, whose first WoO LMS victory came on July 24, 2009, at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park. "He got away a little on the restart, but after a few laps I just felt like his car was coming back to me. Once I caught him I made a couple I don't want say crazy moves, but pretty aggressive moves in lapped traffic. I did it because Bart's won more races here than anyone, so I knew if I got the opportunity to get by him I had to take it right now. I was just lucky it worked," he added. "I think I just saw an opening and was lucky enough to make it happen." Shaver survived several anxious moments during the final circuits, including a near-spin in turn four when he tangled with a lapped car and virtual non-stop threats from Frank (he dived underneath Shaver twice in turn three), McCreadie (he nearly snuck outside Shaver off turn two on lap 27) and Hartman (he made one more inside bid to regain the lead rounding turns three and four on the last lap).

Hartman, 41, was gracious in defeat. He was looking for his first WoO LMS victory since 2004, when he won five times in his only season a tour regular. "I just couldn't get through lapped traffic like Steve," said Hartman. "(The lapped cars) were side-by-side and my car wouldn't move around the bottom like his would. We had a good lead for awhile, but a little after the caution it just dwindled and then I had those guys on top of me. We just did the best we could."

The 36-year-old McCreadie nearly swept by all three drivers ahead of him on lap 27 when he discovered the outside lane around the track, but he couldn't make a move stick. "I just found the outside late," said McCreadie. "I didn't go up there until like three or four to go. I got a good run on Shav, but he never knew I was all the way out there so I could never stay out there. If I could've just got up beside him a little more getting in the corner, I might have been able to get by him. It was a heck of a race, though. The four of us were thrashing it out." McCreadie's 10th top-five finish of the season moved him to second in the WoO LMS points standings, jumping him past Lanigan, who could only salvage a 14th-place finish after suffering a flat tire while leading for the third time in 2010. McCreadie closed to within 54 points of Shinnston, W.Va.'s Josh Richards, who was never a factor all night and finished 11th.

Frank, 48, enjoyed his best finish of the 2010 WoO LMS, but he felt he was just a slight adjustment from perhaps securing a victory.
"I was good, but I was little too tight," said Frank, who recorded just his second top-five finish of the season. "I'll tell 'ya, if it would've turned getting in, I might have had a shot at those guys. I just picked up a push getting in and I couldn't hold the car down where I needed to be." Frank raced after spending much of the afternoon at a local hospital with his wife Mary, who was admitted for observation after falling ill at the track. Frank returned to the speedway just before the start of the hot laps.

Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., advanced from the 12th starting spot to finish sixth. Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va., was seventh after slipping backward from the fifth starting spot, Rick Eckert of York, Pa., placed eighth, 17th-starter Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., was ninth and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., was 10th.

Twenty-seven cars entered the event, which was run on a clear, summer-like evening and brought the WoO LMS to WVMS for the first time since 2004. Davenport was quickest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blistering the sprawling track in 19.805 seconds. It was the second WoO LMS fast-time honor of his career. Heat winners were Hartman, Shaver and Carrier, and the B-Main was captured by Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis.

The RaceFest World Championships will conclude on Sunday (May 30) with a 40-lap WoO LMS A-Main paying $10,000 to win topping the agenda. On-track action begins at 7 p.m.

Mayes gets 1st season win at Fremont; Missler dominates late models; Endicott tames trucks

Sunday, May 30, 2010
By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, OHIO – Brock Mayes has passed a lot of cars so far this racing season, but had yet to reach the Engine Pro Victory Lane at Fremont Speedway. That changed Sunday, as the Bucyrus, Ohio driver drove under Todd Heller on lap 16 and went on to claim his first Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint victory on Helms & Son Excavating Night. “I knew the bottom was the only place to be. I saw that parts were taking a little rubber and when Todd slipped up I got under him and I wasn’t moving,” said Mayes of his 9th career Fremont victory. “I wouldn’t have believed the track would slick off this much, but I was here till 2:30 in the morning and Farmer (speedway promoter Rich Farmer) and the boys tilled it up and dumped water into it. I’ll give them an A for effort…they tried but this heat and stuff. I’ll take this win…I’ve gotten beat on the rubber before.”

Ryan Missler dominated the late model feature, lapping up to 10th place to get his third career Fremont Speedway win. “I was getting kind of impatient there with lapped traffic. I hated to root those guys out of the way…I didn’t know how close second was,” said Missler in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Taze DJ, Terry McConnell Excavating, Quality Welding, Keizer Wheels backed #50. “I watched the 410 feature race and saw one car try the high side and go backwards so I figured I’d keep it on the bottom. My wife drew me a number 1 pill and that’s how we got it done tonight…starting on the pole,” added Missler.

Defending Fremont Fence Dirt Truck track champion Steve Endicott was able to drive around rookie Jeff Wank on lap 10 and went on to score his eighth career Fremont victory. “I just was patient and kept trying him on the bottom and finally he slipped a little and I was able to drive around him,” said Endicott of his winning move. “I have to thank Crown Battery, Fostoria Bait and Tackle and Bob’s Machine Shop and all Bob’s (Dible) crew for working on this thing.”

In the 30-lap 410 sprint feature, Mayes grabbed the early lead with Todd Heller, Mark Keegan and Phil Gressman in tow. Heller would drive under Mayes entering turn three and take the lead on lap 3. Mayes would stay close while Gressman would take third on lap five. The entire field ran single file over the next few laps before Heller would slip off the bottom of turn three and Mayes would pounce, driving into the lead.  Mayes would hit the back of the field and was content to follow as Gressman would slide into second on lap 17 and then pressured Mayes on lap 19. Gressman would try to drive to the outside, allowing Heller to sneak back into second and Keegan into third. Craig Mintz would drive into the third spot on lap 22 while Heller attempted to close on Mayes. Mayes stayed glued to the bottom and would take the checkered over Heller, Mintz, Gressman and Lee Jacobs. “I have to thank my crew, Daniel (Smith) and Keith (Kramer). They keep the car here in Fremont all week because my family business is so busy, and they work on it and I just show up and drive. I have to thank my dad and mom, my wife and our business, J&F Construction and Kear’s Speed Shop, Kinn Brothers Heating and Cooling and Mansfield Cement for all their help,” said Mayes.

Missler would drive away from the field in the late model feature, with Josh Scott, Steve Kester, Ernie Haynes, Ryan Markham and Wayne Maffett Jr. battling for second. Missler would enter lapped traffic by lap seven, but Scott could not close. Meanwhile a heck of a race for third was underway with Kester, Haynes, Markham, Ron Miller and Maffett. Missler would pick his way through the traffic with Scott not being able to close with Kester now comfortably in third and Haynes and Markham racing side by side for fourth. The caution-free feature would wind down with Missler a half track ahead at the checkers over Scott, Kester, Markham and Haynes.

Rookie Jeff Wank would take the lead at the drop of the green for the dirt truck feature with Dible, Endicott and Loren Schwochow and Art Ball in pursuit. Wank would look like a veteran as he would not budge off the bottom while Dible and Endicott ran side-by-side right on his rear bumper. A couple of early yellows would keep the field tight, but Wank would continue to lead. Endicott would drive around Dible for second on lap 8 and begin hounding Wank. Two laps later Endicott drove to Wank’s outside in turn three and would steal the lead. Endicott would pull away for the win with Wank, Dible, Dan Hennig and Jim McGrath rounding out the top five.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 5 on Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome Plating Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action. The second class of the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame will be inducted prior to the night’s racing at 3 p.m. in the covered grandstands and all fans are welcome to attend. It will also be a Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Championship Series night for the 410 sprints and a FAST Title Night presented by Cleveland Golf and Kear’s Speed shop for the 305 sprints.

HANNAGAN, SCHLENK AND TIEMANN TAKE CLASSIC WINS AT ELDORA

ROSSBURG, OH (May 30) – In some of the fiercest action witnessed in years, Randy Hannagan (National Racing Allicance Sprint Invaders), Rusty Schlenk (Sunoco American Late Model Series) and Doug Tiemann (Stock Cars) captured Sunday’s Johnny Appleseed Classic by Miller Lite main event action at Eldora Speedway.

In what has become commonplace whenever they invade the Big E, the NRA Sprints ran their 20-lap main event non-stop. For the fans, and surely the drivers as well, it was five and one-half minutes of practically holding their breath as the action on the track was non-stop.

Returning from a five year break, Kyle Sauder picked up where he left off. Ranked third on the all-time win list, Sauder jumped into the early lead and appeared to have a ‘welcome back’ win in the bag.

Hannagan, meanwhile had other thoughts.

Starting a little deeper in the pack, Hannagan began to reel in Sauder near the mid-point of the chase and on lap 13 made a breath-taking dive off of turn two to steal away the top spot. Sauder appeared to be taken away by the move and slipped back six positions to give the appearance of a Hannagan runaway.

Determination then sunk in and Sauder charged back up to the tail of Hannagan, unaware that Cale Conley joined the chase on became glued to his bumper to make for a wild three-way chase to the checkered.

Coming down for the white flag, indicating one lap to go, Sauder actually nosed under Hannagan on the front stretch, but that gave Hannagan the incentive to punch the throttle even deeper and rode to a narrow one-car length victory over Sauder. Conley nestled in for third, followed closely by Kent Wolters and Hud Horton.

Schlenk’s decision to participate Sunday came at the last minute, and it turned out to be a wise one.

In a chase for the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) National Championship, Schlenk has been hand picking his locations to race, rather than chase a track or series title. The opportunity came to race closer to home, but the two-time ALMS champion opted for Eldora.

A re-draw at the completion of his heat-race found him with the number one draw; but that was hardly indicative of the race he ran. A cake-walk, it wasn’t.

While Schlenk cruised out front in the early stages of the 25-lap chase, Curtis Roberts was dueling for runner-up honors with Frank Heckenast, Jr. and Josh Williams. Only six laps into the contest, Williams coasted to a stop after having battled his way into second.

That put Roberts back into second, with Brian Ruhlman his new nemesis, while Kent Robinson was making his move.
Robinson, a Modified standout, was making his Eldora Late Model debut and what a mark he was making.

He shot by Ruhlman and then Roberts to take second spot on lap 16. Four laps later, he shocked Schlenk by powering past in turn one to take the top spot.

The momentum that Robinson had was unbelievable; yet it all came to a halt with only one lap of glory, as something broke in the front-end and Robinson crashed into the turn three wall to end his hopes of a debut win.

That gave Schlenk the lead back and he was able to hold off a quick-charging Roberts for the win, with Ruhlman, Heckenast and Matt Miller completing the top five.

Tiemann’s Stock Car win wasn’t easy either. He had to hold off three-time champion Mike Dirksen in a run to the checkered flag. In doing so, he became the first two-time winner of the young season.

Knocking on the door for this first-ever win, John Phlipot, Jr. came home third, followed in order by Eric Sandlin and Keith Ralston.

Jeremiah Shingledecker and Randy Hall win Modified Madness at Pittsburgh's PA Motor Speedway on May 28 2010, with Ben Miley, Jake Simmons, A.J. Poljak, and Trevor Gombach also winning.

PITTSBURGH, PA - May 29, 2010 - Jeremiah Shingledecker Polk, PA won the BRP portion of Modified Madness. Shingledecker started on the pole, but had anything of an easy time winning the 30 lapper. Shingledecker grabbed the lead at the start with third starting Brad Rapp hot on his heals for second. The front running pair ran this way until lap 11 when a caution appeared. On the restart Rapp took over and began to pull away, while the battle for 2nd raged between Shingledecker, 8th starting Kevin Bolland, Del Rougeaux and Rex King. Bolland took over 2nd on lap 19, with Rex King moving past Shingledecker also. Shingledecker moved past King for third the following lap and began to battle back with Bolland. Meanwhile Rapp was on cruise control with a comfortable lead. This would all change for Rapp on lap 25 as a puff of smoke came out his exhaust, and Shingledecker also moved past Bolland for second, which ended up being a winning pass. A yellow appeared on lap 26, and Rapp pulled into the pits with engine problems. On the restart Bolland slowed, also exiting with engine problems. From that point on, it was all Shingledecker as he led the remaining laps to pick up his first ever win at the track. Del Rougeaux got by Rex King on one of the late race restarts to end up second followed by King, Rex King Jr., Jeremy Paup, Mike Turner, Jr. McGinley, Kevin Hoffman, Mike Miller, and Steve Feder. Three heats for the 28 cars on hand fell to Del Rougeaux, Gary Smoker, and Jeremiah Shingledecker .

Ageless Veteran Ben Miley, Venetia PA grabbed his first Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models since July 8th 2006 in a 25 lap non-stop event. Mike Norris and John Mollick brought the field down for the start. Norris led the first lap, before Mollick took over on lap 2. Mollick, driving a Jim Lepro backup machine, led the next 9 laps with 5th starting Ben Miley hot on his heels. Miley took the lead on lap 11, with Mollick staying with him for several laps. Meanwhile Steve Baker and Brandon Burgoon were moving up from their 8th and 9th place starting spots. The pair got around Jim Lepro on lap 3, Mike Norris on lap 5 and Lynn Geisler on lap 14. Baker got around Burgoon on lap 17 and began to reel in Mollick, but ran out of time. Miley cruised to the win followed by Mollick, Baker, Burgoon, Geisler, Mike Johnson, Daryl Charlier, Mike Norris, Dave Murdick and Brandon Wearing. Mike Johnson and Dave Murdick grabbed the heats. It was Miley's 54th career win, 2nd on the all time win list.

The ULMS Miley RV Service UMP Modifieds Modified Madness portion of the show saw Olean NY's Randy Hall pick up his 2nd career win at the track. Jeff Taylor and Daryl Charlier brought the field down for the start. Charlier grabbed the lead, while 3rd starting Carl McKinney moved into second on lap 2 and chased Charlier. For the first half of the event Charlier had things going his own way with a comfortable lead over McKinney. Several restarts kept the field close at times, but Charlier was able to pull away on each. Meanwhile Hall moved up from his 5th starting spot into third and began to battle with McKinney for second on lap 4. Hall made his move on McKinney for second on a lap 6 restart, and set after Charlier. As the race went on Hall gained on Charlier, and finally slid past on lap 19. From there on it was Hall's race as he pulled away for the win. Charlier was a disappointing second followed by McKinney, Kari Gasser, Kevin Miller, Tom Martineck, Kyle Bedell, Vince Laboon, Jeff Taylor, Jim Taylor, and Jim Turley. Heats for the 24 cars on hand were won by Carl McKinney, Randy Hall, and Chuck Kennedy. Chuck Kennedy had a fine 4th place run end on lap 23 when he slowed and pitted with mechanical problems. A lap 14 tangle involving six cars knocked Jeff Taylor out of a top five run, however he recovered to finish 9th.

In the Brougher's Machine Shop Crate Lates, Burgettstown PA's Kyle Lukon picked up his second win of the season. Lukon, who started 11th , passed early leader Darrell Dow on lap 9 and never looked back winning by a large margin. Dow who was having a career night, ended up second, but lost out in post race inspection, when it was discovered he had illegal tires on and was D.Q.ed. So that put Dennis Niederriter in second from 12th, for his best run of the year so far, followed by Bryant Hank, Laura Lukon, Mike Reft, Bryan Hoffman, Ken Chernik, Mark Moats Jr., Colton Flinner and Derek Stefanick. The heats had Dennis Niederriter and Kyle Lukon pick up the wins.
The Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Cadets had McKees Rocks PA's Jake Simmons pick up his third win in a row in a battle with Bob Schwartzmiller and Pat Weldon. Joey Koteles grabbed the lead at the start on lap 1 with Bob Schwartzmiller moving ahead on lap 3. Schwartzmiller led until lap 6 when 7th starting Simmons took over. Simmons never could shake Schwartzmiller and Pat Weldon in his sharp new car joined the fray and shadowed Schwartzmiller. At the end it was Simmons, Schwartzmiller, Weldon, Joe Anthony, Joey Koteles, Bobby Heim, Curt Bish, Nick Kocuba, Bill Robertson, and Craig Koteles. Nick Kocuba and Jake Simmons won the two heats.
The Miley BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks had a new winner, with Baldwin PA's A.J. Poljak picking up his first win in the class. Poljak, a veteran in the Sportsman class, subbing for Eric Goldberg in the #25, grabbed the lead on lap 1, lost it briefly on lap 7 to Brian Huchko who was looking for his 4th win of the season, regained it the next lap and led the remainder of the event. Huchko was second followed by Jason Herniak, Robby Torrens, Ed Wiser, Ricky Steigerwald, and Dan Duseheid. Brian Huchko won the heat, winning every heat in the month of May.
In the Imperial Heights Garage DIRTcar Young Guns Sport Compacts, 7th starting Trevor Gombach Claridge PA, won his third straight feature. Trevor was followed by Joe Gombach III, Alec Broniszewski, Daniel White, Ricky Steigerwald, Justin Pons, Tyler Atkinson, and Hannah Ramsey.

Oliver, Adkins, Adams, Sites, Strickland win May 28th!
By:  T. J. Layne

COAL GROVE, OH-After two straight weeks of rainouts, the Rocky Top Raceway finally received a sunny Friday on May 28th for “High School Night” and the “Tri-State Challenge”.  A total of 74 cars from Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Indiana were in attendance.

Before the nights regular racing program got underway, the rained out final 25 laps of the Les Boggs 30 AMRA Modified A-Main and the Bomber A-Main from May 7th were ran.  West Portsmouth’s Doug Adkins dominated the caution free AMRA Modified A-Main to take the $1,000 prize over Todd Robinson in second, Craig Christian third, Tony Dehart fourth, and Vince Conrad fifth.  Jamie Adams won the make-up Bomber A-Main over Bruce Gray Jr., Robert Walker, Kenny Neal, and Dwayne Anderson.

In the nights 25 lap Late Model A-Main, Jackson, Ohio driver Greggie Oliver took the lead at the start while Jackie Boggs passed Jason Perry to move into the second position.  Oliver maintained about a seven car length lead over Boggs until the races first caution flew on lap 11.  On the restart, the two went side by side for the lead through turns one and two and made contact off of two and down the backstretch!  The two ran side by side down the backstretch and into turn three with Oliver maintaining the lead!

Boggs then tried every groove on the track to try to get back up to Oliver, but couldn’t close in.  On the last lap, with the race well in hand for Oliver, a caution flag flew for a crash in turn three, setting up a green-white-checkered restart.  On the restart, Boggs went high into one as the two battled side by side!  Boggs could not hold his run off of two though as Greggie Oliver went on to lead the final two laps and claim his first career RTR feature win!  Boggs finished second with Kevin Wagner third, Terry Hicks fourth, and Jason Perry fifth.  Oliver won the dash race while Rod Evans and Shannon Thornsberry won heat races.

Adam Jordan led the field to start the 20 lap AMRA Modified A-Main.  Jordan led the first five laps with Opening Night winner Vince Conrad in second.  On a lap five restart, fourth place runner Doug Adkins put his car on the high side and had a tremendous run through turns one and two to battle side by side for the lead down the backstretch!

Adkins would take the lead off of turn four and checked out from there to claim his second feature win of the night!  Adam Colley finished second with Vince Conrad third, Mike Wilson fourth, and Todd Robinson fifth.  Jordan won the dash race while Eddie Harmon and Tony Dehart won heat races.  Mike Matney won the B-Main.

Jamie Adams dominated the Bomber A-Main to claim his second feature win of the night.  Bruce Gray Jr. finished second with Jim Helterbrand third, David Dunn fourth, and Robert Walker fifth.  Adams and Gray won heat races.

Mark Noel took the lead to start the Mod Lite A-Main with fifth place starter Tony Sites moving into the second position right from the start.  Sites ran right on Noel’s bumper for several laps until lap ten when the two would go side by side for the lead.  Coming off of turn two while battling side by side, the two made heavy contact with Noel spinning!

Noel would leave the track with extensive damage while Sites inherited the lead.  Sites went on to lead the final five laps to take his second win of the season with Randy Armes in second, Shane Casto third, Chris Stone fourth, and Mark Sites fifth.  Noel and Brock Morris won heat races.

In the 4 cylinder A-Main, Oak Hill, Ohio’s Mike Strickland took the lead at the start and dominated to take his first career RTR feature win.  Jerry Massie finished second with Dwayne Anderson third, Ronnie Massie fourth, and James Johnson fifth.  Strickland and Rex Smith Jr. won heat races.

Rocky Top Raceway will be in action on Friday, June 4th with the running of the Rocky Top 100.  On the card will be Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, a $500 to win 4 cylinder special, and the “Rocky Top 100” $1,000 to win Enduro race at the end of the night.  General admission is $12 with kids (7-12) general admission $2, kids six and under free, and pit passes $25.  Gates open at 4:00 pm with hot laps starting the nights action at 7:30 pm.  For more information visit www.rockytopraceway.net.

Smith Takes OVSCA Main, Garnes Garners LM's, Johnson doubles in Mods, Wilson, Adkins, White, Staats win!
May 28, 2010   STEWART, OHIO - The thunder roared and so did veteran Chillicothe, Ohio Danny Smith as the veteran outlaw driver claimed the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association $3,000-to-win "Thunder Thirty" at Billy Jarrell's Skyline Speedway Friday night. In the Late Model main Evans, WV driver Chris Garnes stormed from 11th to first in claiming the win, passing Chris Carpenter with two laps to go. Kenny Johnson claimed both ends of the Malta AMRA Modifieds, while Ryan Wilson (Pure Stocks), Tommy Adkins (4
Cylinders), and Abby White (Mini-Wedges) claimed the support features.

In the OVSCA sprint main Hartford, Ohio's Dale Blaney took the initial lead with Josh Davis close in tow. Like a lion in wait, Davis stalked Blaney for the first 14 laps, then shortly after a restart Davis briefly took the lead. Another restart set the
stage for Danny Smith who overcame both Blaney and Davis on lap 16 and rode onward to victory.
Davis tried Smith on another restart, but Smith just had too much power driving off the turns in posting the win. Blaney exited on lap 20 with a flat tire, poising Cole Duncan, Keith Baxter, and Jim Nier for top ten finishes. Nier had charged from 11th to
5th in a great driver, while Baxter and Duncan sparred throughout the race. Rounding out the top ten were Smith, Davis, Duncan, Baxter, Nier, Brian Smith, Jimmy Stinson, Kory Crabtree, Dave Dickson, and Eddie Slone. Dickson was the race hard-charger in
a 17th to 9th place run.

In the AMRA Late Models, young St. Albans, WV driver Nick Dohm got the jump on pole-sitter Chris Carpenter and
led the first 22-laps of an all green run. Dohm, the youngest of the Dohm siblings at 16, lost the handle on lap 23, setting up an exciting finish. Chris Carpenter inherited the lead and led the 23rd circuit, but Chris Garnes was on a charge. Picking off cars
throughout the race, Garnes finally blasted by as Carpenter and Audie Swartz fought it out for the top spot. Garnes got Carpenter the next circuit and blasted on to the win. Larry Bond and K.C. Burdette passed Scott Wolfe for
third and fourth on the 13th round. Freddie Carpenter had a top three wrapped up, but got into the wall on the 23rd circuit. Bond roared on to second place as Garnes, Bond, Carpenter, Andy Bond, KC Burdette, Roy Roush, Scott Wolfe, Dan Morrison, Tony
Roush, and Travis Brookover rounded out the top ten.

Kenny Johnson was sizzling Friday night as he took both ends of the Malta AMRA modifieds, claiming the regular main after a battle with Doug Henry, Jason Montgomery, Kenny Riddle, and Robert Garnes. Johnson had earlier claimed the make-up
main from May 7th over Rick Venham, Robert Garnes, Jeremy Berwanger, Doug Henry, Mike McPherson, Jeremy Roush, Mark Luning, Jeremy Blake, Mike Sprouse, and Kurt Stacy. In the night's regular main Johnson had the edge on the point, but the battle for second was a battle. Henry finally won the battle for second after a race-long fight with Jason Montgomery, and Robert Garnes. Robbie Evans and Rick Venham also had good runs. Rounding out the top ten were Kenny Johnson, Doug Henry, Jason Montgomery, Robert Garnes, Robbie Evans, Rick Venham, Jeremy Roush, Kenny Riddle, Mark Luning, and Kurt Stacy.

Ryan Wilson has been the king of the first half of the season. Wilson reigned once again Friday after a long battle with Rick VanDyne and Jeremy Blake. Rounding out the top ten were Wilson, VanDyne, Blake, Curt Reck, Gary Gould, Shane Roush, Jerrod Willis, Justin Sinnett, and George Klintworth. Tom Adkins reigned supreme once again in the FWD Four Cylinders. The Portland native blasted in the lead and never looked back. Rounding out the top ten were Adkins, Chris Lauer, Brandon Davis, George Klintworth, Barry Kitts, Tyler Emmelhainz, Jeff Rankin, Tony Gilkey, Dean Wingrove, and Denzil Baker.

Abby White won the mini-wedge main. Rounding out the top ten were Abby White, Tyler Evans, Coleman Evans, Cameron Roush, Samantha Roush, Darryl Murphy, Skylar Zimmerman, Nathan Carpenter, and Martin Gibson Jr.. Sydney Staats
won the blue clone mini wedge main in the following order: Sydney Staats, Hunter Cline, Corey Miller.

Coming June 4 are the Mid-Season Championships with Twin 30's in the Late Models and Sprints. Admission is $15.

Owens Shows The Way In 'My Old Kentucky Home Shootout' At Bluegrass Speedway

BARDSTOWN, KY - May 8, 2010 - Jimmy Owens joined the ever-growing list of 2010 World of Outlaws Late Model Series winners on Saturday night, rolling to victory in the 50-lap 'My Old Kentucky Home Shootout' at Bluegrass Speedway.

Owens, 38, of Newport, Tenn., grabbed the lead from Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., on lap two and never looked back in the national tour's inaugural visit to the high-banked, half-mile oval. He survived a stern mid-race challenge from another Kentuckian, Darrell Lanigan of Union, to become the 11th different victor in 12 WoO LMS events this season. It was the third career triumph on the WoO LMS for Owens, who has won three times and hasn't finished worse than third in the five starts he's made since late-March. His successful early-season run in the Reece Monuments Team Zero by Bloomquist car includes a second-place finish in the WoO LMS 'Commonwealth 100' on April 17 at Virginia Motor Speedway. "It's been a great month for us," said Owens, a four-time DIRTcar UMP Modified national champion and two-time winner of the prestigious UMP-sanctioned World 100. "It takes a team to do this, and right now we're clicking pretty well."

Francis, who started from the pole position but fell back to fifth after a lap-two restart rallied to finish second in his Valvoline Rocket car. He snatched the runner-up spot from Lanigan on lap 43 but never challenged Owens, crossing the finish line 1.725 seconds behind at a track that's promoted by his in-laws David and Anita Ferrell. Lanigan settled for third place after a lap-21 scrape with Owens damaged the front end of his car, effectively ending his hopes of completing an impressive charge from the 11th starting spot to the lead. Outside polesitter Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., finished fourth in the MasterSbilt house car – and earned the $500 WoO LMS 'Bonus Bucks' cash for being the highest-finishing driver who hasn't won a tour A-Main and isn't ranked among the top 12 in series points – and 12th-starter Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., completed the top five in the Sheltra Construction Rocket. The race's most important moment was the contact between Owens and Lanigan as they raced for the lead on lap 21. Lanigan hugged the bottom of the track to pull alongside Owens through turns one and two, but exiting the corner Owens came down the track and touched the right-front of Lanigan's car, causing the 2008 WoO LMS champion to get out of shape and fall to third.

Lanigan regained second from O'Neal on a lap-25 restart and briefly threatened Owens after the A-Main's fourth and final caution flag on lap 33, but his car wouldn't allow him to ascend into the lead. "I don't know if he didn't see me or what, but when I got together with Owens it messed up the front end a little bit," said Lanigan. "It knocked the toe out on the right front and we weren't as good as we had been. We went a little softer on tires too, so when the track kind of went away at the end we were holding on." Owens directed his apologies for the incident toward Lanigan. "I was touching the cushion on the high side," said Owens, who earned $10,000 for his fourth career win at Bluegrass. "I rolled off (turn two) and seen Lanigan there (on the inside) about the same time I was done committed to the brown to get around the lapped car. I kind of misjudged – I didn't think Darrell would throw it out as far as he did and we just bumped a little bit. It was just a racing deal. I hope he feels the same way."

Francis, meanwhile, was satisfied with his second-place finish. It was a marked improvement over his disappointing 10th-place run in the previous night's WoO LMS event at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway. "I couldn't run with Owens," said Francis, who married the Bluegrass Speedway promoters' daughter, Amanda, on Feb. 27. "But I can't complain about a second. At one point I thought I was gonna be about a 10th place car, so we were fortunate to get back to second."

Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., finished sixth, fading during the race's second half after moving from the 13th starting spot to fourth by lap 20. WoO LMS points leader Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., placed a quiet seventh, followed by Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., 17th-starter Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., and 16th-starter Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis. Defending WoO LMS champion Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who entered the event tied for the points lead with McCreadie, finished 12th after pitting to change a cut right-rear tire on lap 25 while running inside the top 10. He left Bluegrass trailing McCreadie by 10 points. Other caution flags were caused by Jordan Bland of Campbellsville, Ky., who stopped in turn four with engine problems on lap one; Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., who started sixth but fell to the back of the pack after a scramble sent him against the wall between turns one and two on the second lap; and Dustin Neat of Dunnville, Ky., who slid across the track in turn four on lap 33.

Forty cars were entered in the event, but only 39 competed after Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio, scratched for the night before hot laps.

O'Neal set a new track record in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blazing around the track in 14.563 seconds (123.601 mph). It was his first career fast-time honor in WoO LMS competition.

Heat winners were O'Neal, Justin Rattliff of Campellsville, Ky., Richards and Owens. The B-Mains were captured by Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., and Brad Neat of Dunnville, Ky.

The WoO LMS now heads east for a doubleheader, visiting Delaware International Speedway in Delmar on Thurs., May 13, and Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway on Sat., May 15. Both events will feature 50-lap A-Mains paying $10,000 to win.

A “Stormy” Kind of Night at 250 Speedway

Week #3 of the 2010 racing season saw threatening skies, hot temper’s and lots of side by side racing – what more could you ask for on a wild and crazy but very entertaining Friday night. We had cars upside down, inside out and all over the speedway with four more drivers picking up their first feature wins this season. Sixty three racers were pit side and as stated in the headline, fans witnessed a “stormy” night at the 3/8 mile oval.

Before the evening got started, we held a moment of silence for Dirt Track Hall of Famer Herb Scott who passed away this week. 250 Speedway sends out our prayers and condolences to the Scott family.

The TSMA Modified 20 lap main event was the third feature to hit the speedway and it was a wild one. Due to the quick schedule trying to beat the weather front that was fast approaching and the delay while EMS crews transported 4-Cylinder driver Jamie Leslie to the Care Center after an acrobatic flip gone bad on the back straightaway (Thankfully, Jamie was ok and returned to the speedway later on), it took some extra time to get everyone lined up. The #30 of Todd Brennan, who won heat race number one, made it on to the speedway for the feature, but pulled off unexpectedly before the drop of the green. I know what you’re thinking and yes, it was that kind of a night. So that moved the #309 of “Stormin” Norman Aronhalt to the pole position with the #65M of Mike Davis along side. At the drop of the green flag, Aronhalt was able to race out front with Davis right behind. After a few early cautions involving some “quickie” yellows, even the second on lap four when the #23M of Rob Melzer joined the upside down club, the race looked as though it would settle down with the #309 setting the pace and the #28 of Kevin Morehouse working his way nicely up into the second spot. That is when things got crazy. At the halfway mark, the #65 of Bruce Takach appeared to lose power on the backstretch and stopped at the exit of turn #4. After a brief delay for some extracurricular activity and some drivers being disqualified under TSMA General Rule #3, we got back to racing like it should be. With the final caution waving on lap twelve, the final restart of the evening would be key. “Stormin” Norman was bringing the field in very slow all night, and all night it worked to perfection. “The Logger” staged a valiant effort over the final eight circuits, but there was a storm brewing on the horizon and “Stormin” Norman wasn’t to be denied on this night. Following the Wooster, OH driver in the #309 was Morehouse, Randy Bauknecht, Jim Plance and Hard Charger of the night Mike Enos, filling in for Jon Sluka in the #21J, all the way from the 13 th starting position.

The second feature of the evening was the 15 lap Super Sport feature and it was a good one. Bringing the field down for Chief Starter Keith Decker’s green flag was heat race winner’s Mike Phillips Jr. in the #11TEEN and Tory Gibbs in the #10. Gibbs was able to race out front with Phillips and the #11H of Jim Hess close in tow. During the first few circuits, the man on the charge was the #77R of Glen Richea. In preliminary action, the Richea ride experienced some mechanical woes, which relegated him to the 7 th starting position for the main event. By the time the green and white cross flags were displayed, Richea was up fighting for the third position, with the top two in his crosshairs. About that time, the leader slowed and later had to pull pit side for the finish, handing over the lead to Phillips. As the laps clicked away in the caution free event, Phillips kept his racer right in the middle of the race track as Hess searched for a way around and Ritchea tried to play catch up. Philips drove a perfect race in his first time out this season and was able to fend off all challengers to pick up the victory. Another great race by the driver’s in this class, who continue to race side by side, high and low and caution free. Following the New Philadelphia, OH driver in the Ridge Pump Supply, Mushrush Utilities, Allstate Insurance – Mike Taylor, Foutz Appliance, MJP Logging, Walton’s Auto Parts and JW Cookson Co. sponsored #11TEEN was Hess, Richea, Brock Burcher and Paul Murray.

The Pure Stock’s took to the speedway for their feature, with the #81 of Tony Painter and the #43 of DJ Hores leading the field to the green flag. The only caution of the event was on lap three for the #21 of Phil Wade who spun at the exit of turn #2. Painter was setting the pace with Hores in second and the #80 of Rich Frohnaple running in third. Hores continued to try and work on the leader as the laps wound down, but came under fire from Frohnaple. That’s when offensive mode turned to defensive, allowing

Painter to inch away and pick up the victory leaving a side by side, photo finish for second. Following the Dresden, OH driver in the #81 machine to the stripe was Frohnaple, Hores, Justin VanFossen and Wade.

The final feature of the evening was in the 4-Cylinder division. Starting on the pole and looking for the 3-peat to start off the season was the #95 of Scotty Bush with the #28 of Jimmy Orr along side. Orr was able to grab the top spot and started to ease away from the black and yellow Neon of Bush as the caution waved on lap five for the #45 of Robert Frohnaple in turn three. On the restart, Orr got a great jump and looked as if he might end the Bush streak……….and then he spun in turn four. Watching Jimmy this season is like watching Mario Andretti at the Indianapolis 500, every time he is leading and you think he has it in the bag, something happens. You could always count on Tom Carnegie, the long time voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, saying “Andretti is slow on the backstretch”. At 250 Speedway, it’s “Hot Rod” saying “What just happened to Jimmy?” Back under green, Bush set sail and was able to pick up the tri-fecta, despite a strong effort by Dan Rummes in the #12K machine to dethrone the great Neon. Following the Massillon, OH driver in the Discount Tire Outlet of Massillon sponsored #95 was Rummes, Brian King, Brandon Welker and Orr.

We will finish up this week with the first feature to hit the Speedway on week three, The Mini Wedges. Last week was a mess, this week an adjustment by the scorers and a great job by the drivers left us with a much better event. With the car count on the rise and officials getting better learning our newest division, this could be the division to watch throughout the season. Heat race winners Levi Bowen in the #95 and Blake Morris in the #1 started on the front row. Bowen was able to position his racer out front followed closely by the #13 of last week’s winner Dillyn Wyer and Morris. On lap number two, the third place runner Morris spun in turn three bringing out the caution. After the restart it was all Bowen as he was able to motor away and pick up his first win at the “Wide Oval”. Following the Zanesville, OH driver in the orange and white #95 was Wyer, Bubeck, hard charger Dakota Hess up from the tenth starting position and Lane Bryan rounding out the top 5.

Please join us next week and watch all 5 division’s in regular program action. Don’t forget, next Saturday is week #1 of 6 for our “Wheel to wheel racing” night at 250 Speedway. Make sure you visit 250speedway.com for all the latest news and information from “Ohio’s Place to Sling Dirt”.

Eddie Kirchoff Closing In On Colorado Late Model Association DIRTcar Series Alltime Win Record

After Season-Opening Victories In Kansas, Wyoming Star Looks To Continue CLMA Success This Weekend On Home Turf

DENVER, CO – May 12, 2010 – Eddie Kirchoff performed spectacularly 12 hours from home last weekend. This weekend he'll try to put together another perfect performance in his backyard.

Hot off a sweep of a historic doubleheader co-sanctioned by the Colorado Late Model Association DIRTcar Series and Midwest DIRTcar Late Model Series at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway Park, Gillette, Wyo.'s Kirchoff is ready to defend his home turf when the CLMA tour visits Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., on Friday night (May 14) and Gillette (Wyo.) Thunder Speedway on Saturday evening (May 15). And Kirchoff, 27, will also be chasing history this weekend. After doubling up at Dodge City he owns 13 career CLMA DIRTcar Series victories, moving him past Kelly Boen of Henderson, Colo., for second on the tour's alltime win list and within striking distance of the record 16 triumphs held by Brett Hallmark of Grand Junction, Colo. "I didn't even realize I was close to the record," said Kirchoff, one of the top DIRTcar Late Model talents in the Rocky Mountain region. "Hopefully we can move a little closer to it this weekend."

Kirchoff brings plenty of momentum into the Black Hills/Gillette double-dip. He tore through the field twice last weekend at Dodge City, advancing from the eighth starting spot to win the Friday-night preliminary and charging from the 12th slot in Saturday evening's 30-lapper to complete his sweep of the 'Six Shooter Showdown.' "It was a long drive to Kansas but it was definitely worth it after the weekend we had," said Kirchoff, who pocketed a total of $2,700 for his triumphs in the first-ever CLMA and MDLMS events under the DIRTcar Racing banner. "The track was beautiful, and the shape and size (three-eighths-mile) kind of reminded me of my hometown track (Gillette Thunder) but with a wall around it." Kirchoff, who won the CLMA DIRTcar Series championship in 2007, has won six CLMA events at Gillette and one at Black Hills Speedway over the past three years. "It'll be nice to have two races within a two-hour drive of home," said Kirchoff, who currently works at his father Ed's K&K Import Repair after being laid off from his engineer's job at the Jacob Ranch coal mine in Wright, Wyo., following a change of ownership. "We're off to a good start and want to keep it going."

A December 2008 graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, S.D., Kirchoff is a proponent of the CLMA and MDLMS tours now running under the sanction of DIRTcar Racing, which provides him and other drivers from Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and nearby states more opportunities to be part of DIRTcar's UMP points program. "The sanction with UMP and DIRTcar is one of the best things that could happen (for the series)," said Kirchoff, who got a taste of racing in DIRTcar UMP's heartland when he traveled to the Midwest to follow the grueling UMP Summer Nationals tour in 2007. "Hopefully it keeps building out here." Kirchoff will face plenty of tough competition this weekend, including Colorado drivers Scott Lewis, Dean Moore and Dave Garmann and Casper, Wyo.'s Jason Schirkolk, who finished 12 points behind Eddie in the 2009 weekly Late Model points standings at Gillette. Both races will pay $1,200 to win and $200 to start.

Just Enough Power: Richards Holds Off Brady Smith To Capture 'First State 50' At Delaware International Speedway

DELMAR, DE - May 13, 2010 - Josh Richards had just enough power left under the hood of his Rocket Chassis house car to capture Thursday night's World of Outlaws Late Model Series 'First State 50' at Delaware International Speedway.

Running more than half the A-Main's distance on what he said was seven cylinders, Richards managed to turn back a furious late-race challenge from Brady Smith to record his series-leading third victory of the 2010 WoO campaign. He is the only driver who has won more than once in the national tour's 13 events contested to date. Richards, 22, of Shinnston, W.Va., led the rough-and-tumble 50-lapper from start-to-finish, never faltering on the restarts that followed the race's nine caution flags. The defending WoO LMS champion crossed the finish line 0.244 of a second ahead of Solon Springs, Wis.'s Smith, whose runner-up placing in his Team Zero by Bloomquist mount was his best since he won the tour's second event of '10 on Feb. 13 at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. The victory also moved Richards back into the WoO LMS points lead by 22 points over Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., who fell from the catbird's seat in the standings following a dismal 16th-place finish. McCreadie cut a right-rear tire while running fifth on lap 23 and later retired on lap 43 with apparent jackshaft problems after climbing back to 10th place. "Luck was definitely on our side tonight," said Richards, who earned $10,675 for his 23rd career triumph on the WoO LMS. "We ran good in our heat, drew the outside pole (starting spot for the A-Main), were able to run up front and keep in clean air the whole way in the feature, and survived an engine problem. I guess it was just meant to be tonight."

Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., lost second place to Smith on a lap-23 restart and battled an overheating engine for much of the distance, but he held on to finish third in his Valvoline Rocket car. Teenage Rookie of the Year contender Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del. – racing at a track just minutes from his home – advanced from the 19th starting spot to finish fourth in Dale Beitler's Rocket car, while 11th-starter Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., completed the top five in NASCAR star Clint Bowyer's Warrior Chassis after ceding fourth to Hubbard on a lap-48 restart. The road to victory was certainly nerve-racking for Richards, who thought his tough luck in WoO LMS action at the half-mile oval was about to continue when his Cornett engine began to sour as he set the pace. His previous disappointments at DIS included a tangle with a lapped car after leading the first 20 laps of the 2007 event and a first-lap incident in 2009 that forced him to run the remainder of the distance one lap down in an extremely beat-up machine. "I don't know what happened exactly, but I felt something change in the engine just before halfway," said Richards. "When it happened I thought we were done, because we were definitely down huge on power all of a sudden. But after 10 or 15 laps I was still leading and I really hadn't heard anybody, so I was like, 'I must be O.K.' Actually, being down on power might have helped because I could roll through the corner, run wide open and the car stuck. I could keep all my momentum up."

Richards was chased throughout the race's second half by Smith, who started fourth. Smith closed right up on the rear bumper of Richards's car exiting turn two several times during the final laps and stuck his machine's nose under Richards after a lap-48 restart, but he couldn't pull off a pass. Less than one week after Richards saw a potential victory at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway slip through his fingers because he tangled with a lapped car on the last lap and was then nipped at the finish line by Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., the young sensation made it all the way to the checkered flag first. "I saw (Smith) with like two (laps) to go," said Richards. "I slipped in three and four and I saw him flash under me for a second, but I had enough momentum to pull him off the corner. Then I just tried to hold on for the last lap. This track bit us a couple times in the past, so it's nice to come out here and finally get a win." Smith, who turns 33 on May 31, wore a satisfied smile despite falling short of victory. "I gave it all I had, and I'm sure (Richards) was giving it all he had," said Smith. "It was a good race. It was fun. I really thought I was gonna be able to run under him coming through (turns) three and four on that last lap, but I just over-charged the corner because I was trying not to leave anything on the racetrack and do everything I could to win. We'll take second," he added. "Oh my god, we needed a paycheck worse than you could ever imagine. We've had a great race car and my guys have been working hard, but we just haven't had things fall into place this year."

Among the WoO LMS stars who ran into trouble during the event were good buddies Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., and Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y. Both drivers brought out caution flags after their cars' noses were bent under from digging into the racetrack – Smith on lap nine after he had started from the pole position and run second for laps 1-8, and Fuller on lap 48 when slid off the track in turn one while holding 11th place. Finishing in positions 6-10 was fifth-starter Rick Eckert of York, Pa., who climbed as high as fourth; Clanton, who started 15th; Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., who started and finished in the same spot; 17th-starter Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa.; and Russell King of Bristolville, Ohio, who registered his first top-10 finish of the 2010 season. DIS regular Donald Lingo Jr. of Millsboro, Del., who finished 12th, received the $500 WoO LMS 'Bonus Bucks' cash for being the highest-finishing driver who hasn't won a tour A-Main and isn't ranked among the top 12 in the points standings.

Forty cars were signed in for the event, which was run on an overcast evening with no threat of rain.

Eckert was fastest in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials with a lap of 18.377 seconds (97.949 mph). It was his first fast-time honor of 2010.

Heat winners were Eckert, Francis, McCreadie and Brady Smith. The B-Mains were captured by Frank and Mark Byram of Georgetown, Del.

Millsboro, Del.'s Amanda Whaley, a 15-year-old Late Model rookie at Delaware International Speedway, finished third in the second B-Main to qualify for a WoO LMS A-Main in her first-ever appearance on the tour. She placed 19th in the 50-lapper, completing 33 laps before retiring.

Whaley became just the third female driver to start a WoO feature, joining WoO rookie Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, who finished 23rd in the First State 50 after gaining entry to the field thanks to a provisional, and April Farmer of Livingston, Tenn. Both George and Farmer broke the tour's gender barrier during the 2009 season.

The WoO LMS moves on to Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway for the 29th annual 'Conococheague 50' on Sat., May 15.

Sarver, PA (May 15, 2010) In this fast paced world we live in, regardless of whether it’s a good book or a DVRed sporting event, sometimes it just makes sense to skip to the end for the best part!  Taking nothing away from Rod George’s breathtaking pass on Carl Bowser with two to go, Gregg Satterlee’s charge to the front past Hall of Famer Lynn Geisler, or Joe Kelley’s second straight win, the best part of Valvoline/Armed Forces/PCTC Night was the Diehl Auto Group DIRTcar Modified feature in which Jim Weller Jr. and Del Rougeux Jr. thrilled the crowd with the best race of the year!

Rouguex started on the pole alongside small block ace Gary Smoker and jumped out to an early lead.  Weller started ninth but caught a big break when Defending Track Champion Jeremiah Shingledecker got sideways in the apex of turns three and four, collecting Dean Pearson and Dave Murdick.  By lap six, Weller had taken second from Kevin Bolland and set his sights on “Leadfoot” Del Rougeux.  Rougeux was on the gas and looked like the car to beat.  But seasoned veteran Jim Weller Jr. has faced and beaten the best Western PA has had to offer for years, decades actually, and was undaunted by the challenge of running down Rougeux.  By lap seven, Weller was pounding the cushion in the turns and drag racing Rougeux down the straightaways.

What unfolded over the next 18 laps can only be described as a slugfest between Rougeux and Weller.  Not just from lap to lap, but even within the same lap, Weller and Rougeux swapped the lead over and over again.  Weller would use big runs off the top cushion of turns two and four to pull ahead, only to see Rougeux slide low through the next turn to steal back the lead.  They split lapped cars high and low, each took turns stealing the others line when a slight lead and lapped traffic allowed.  But despite the constant door-to-door and wheel-to-wheel action, neither driver compromised the integrity of the race by using the notorious “chrome horn”.  As they approached the checkered flag, lapped traffic was still in play and ultimately cost Rougeux the win as he got held up just enough in turns three and four to allow Weller to pound the top cushion one last time and blast past Rougeux exiting turn four to steal the win!  The pulse-pounding victory was Weller’s first at the Action Track since July 11, 2008 and the 34th of his proud career!

Del Rougeux Jr. crossed the stripe a disappointing, but most impressive second.  Kevin Bolland recovered from an off night last weekend to finish where he started, in third.  “Double Duty” Dave Murdick shook off the effects of the early caution to finish fourth ahead of last Friday’s feature winner Brian Swartzlander.  Gary Smoker, Mike Turner, Chris Haines, Carl Murdick and Steve Feder rounded out the Diehl Top Ten.  Haines, the 2007 Western PA Rookie of the Year, made his Lernerville Debut in a Big Block Modified; the same chassis, (and paint/decal scheme save the 5H of his #35H), that carried Shingledecker to the title last year.  Del Rougeux Jr. and Dean Pearson won National Guard Heat Races.

Long before the Rougeux/Weller slugfest, Defending Track Champion Rod George thrilled the crowd with a classic slide job to steal a win away from Sarver’s own Carl Bowser in the Ti22 Performance DIRTcar Sprint feature.  Bowser started on the front row and jumped out to a quick lead ahead of second row starters Charlie Holben and Danny Holtgraver.  After starting sixth, George quickly dispatched Holtgraver and Holben to take second.  A couple early cautions slowed the race, but from lap nine on, the race stayed green.  Despite having to navigate heavy lapped traffic, Bowser seemed poised to claim his first feature of 2010.  But with three laps to go, George dove full bore into turn three and slid ahead of Bowser exiting turn four to take the lead.  Once out front, George is nearly impossible to reel back in!  Bowser took one last shot exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag, but the “Kittanning Comet” rolled on towards Sheetz Victory Lane for the 42nd time in his illustrious career.  The win was extra special for car owner Suzanne Stivason, whose husband Bill was celebrating his birthday!

A disappointed Carl Bowser scored a season best second place finish, a bittersweet accomplishment but it’s something to build on as the season unfolds!  Ed Lynch Jr. came from eighth to finish third, another bittersweet feat for the all time division wins leader whom had already won three races by this time last year.  Charlie Holben continues to shine with another great run to finish fourth in his own #42G.  Pittsburgh Hotshoe Danny Holtgraver scored back-to-back top five finishes for the first time in his career at the Sarver Speedplant, despite fighting the affects of a broken wrist.  The most impressive run of the night was turned in by “The Repo Man” Pete Miller III who chalked up a sixth place finish, the best of his blossoming career!  The most impressive part of Miller’s finish was the guys that finish directly behind him; Jack Sodeman Jr. in seventh, Kevin Schaeffer in eighth, last week’s feature winner Bob Felmlee in ninth and Scott Priester in 10th.  Beating any of those four guys would have been a major accomplishment; beating all four in the same night is fantastic!  National Guard Heats were checkered by Sodeman and Felmlee.

Experience beat youthful exuberance in the Ti22 Sprints, so it made sense that Hall of Famer Lynn Geisler would show the bevy of young talent behind him the way to Sheetz Victory Lane in the DIRTcar Late Models.  After all, Geisler has made that stop 108 times.  Only Bob Wearing Sr. and Lou Blaney have more wins at the Action Track.  For the first 18-20 laps, it appeared as though Geisler would score win #109, but Generation Now Superstar Gregg Satterlee had other plans!  Starting 10th, Satterlee had his work cut out for him with Bud Points Leader Dave Hess Jr., Jared Miley, John Garvin Jr., Gary Lyle and Denton Boyer between he and Geisler.  But Satterlee is one of the brightest young Late Model drivers in the country and has battled the best of the best all over the east coast the past couple seasons!  By lap four Satterlee was engaged in a dogfight with Hess for third, then a few laps later for second.  Geisler had to love the battle going on behind him, as it allowed him to pull away to a full straightaway lead by lap nine.  A handful of cautions slowed the field and allowed Satterlee to restart alongside Geisler.  The top cushion was the desired line through the turns, so Geisler chose to restart on the outside of the front row and the strategy proved correct on the first few restarts, but Satterlee finally found the right line with enough momentum to take the lead in turns one and two on the lap 21 restart.  Geisler tried to battle back and pound the top cushion entering turn three, but incidental contact with Satterlee sent the Hall of Famer spinning off turn three and bringing out the caution.  Geisler’s misfortune was Hess’s golden opportunity, but “The Truth” proved to be too strong and won his first feature of the 2010 Fab Four Racing season.  Satterlee became the fifth different winner in five Late Model features this season.

Earlier in the evening, Gregg Satterlee was chosen as the National Guard Heat Race Challenge winner by a lucky fan.  Satterlee pocketed an extra $50 from the National Guard and the fan, whose son leaves for the National Guard this week, won a National Guard Backpack and a ride in the National Guard Humvee!

Dave Hess Jr. maintains the lead in the Budweiser Point Standings with another heat race win and a solid second place finish in the feature; his sixth top five finish in six tries (five in the lates, plus a win in the UMP Mods).  Jared Miley and Alex Ferree battled each other in the closing laps, with Miley prevailing for third.  Behind Ferree in fourth was Sarver’s own John Garvin Jr. in fifth.  Gary Lyle returned to the Action Track after engine woes Opening Night to finish sixth, while early leader Lynn Geisler recovered to finish seventh.  Denton Boyer, Chuck Sarver and Todd Bachman rounded out the top ten!  As mentioned above, Satterlee and Hess won their respective National Guard Heat Races.

The Charapp Route 28 DIRTcar Sportsman feature rolled onto the speedway third last night, a break from their usual “Main Event” status of bringing Fab Four Racing to a close.  Eric Piotrowski and Shawn Thorn brought the field to the green flag with Thorn taking the early advantage.  After problems in his heat race, last week’d feature winner Joe Kelley started 13th in the feature, but wasted little time making his way to the front.  A handful of early cautions prevented the field from getting strung out and by lap six, Kelley got around an upstart Eric Piotrowski to take second place.  Piotrowski enjoyed the best run of his career, battling Brett McDonald for third for the majority of the 20-lap feature.  Ahead of Piotrowski and McDonald, Kelley was taking measure of Thorn and made his move on a lap nine restart.  The first restart was called back as Kelley and Thorn played cat and mouse, with Kelley jumping the gun a bit.  Thorn dropped the hammer first on the second restart, but Kelley still took the lead exiting turn two.  Once out front, Kelley cruised to his 35th career Lernerville Feature Win and extended his lead in the Budweiser Point Standings.

Thorn slowed dramatically exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag and coasted to a disappointing fifth place finish.  Former Track Champion Butch Lambert filled in for Jason Fosnaught (whom was attending a wedding in San Diego) in the Bill Seitz Racing #J19, and took advantage of Thorn’s late race heartbreak to take second.  Terry Young had a fast car all night long and finished third, his best run of the season.  Ryan Moyer also scored his best finish of the season in fourth.  Brett McDonald (sixth) and Eric Piotrowski (seventh) had their best runs of the year.  Mark Sander, Jim Fosnaught and Jim Bills rounded out the Charapp Top Ten.  Bills scored the first top ten of his career.  Wayne Carbo and Terry Young were National Guard Heat Race winners.  Carbo continues to find bad luck, or vice versa.  While running eighth and challenging the top five, Carbo was sent spinning off turn two.  He rode to the pits on the business end of a tow truck.

Hopefully a relaxing Sunday afternoon at Kennywood Park for the Pittsburgh Circle Track Club’s Motorsports Day will be just the medicine the doctor ordered for Carbo’s terrible misfortune in the opening stages of the 2010 season!  Along with Carbo’s #54 Charapp Route 28 DIRTcar Sportsman mount, the #1 Cochran Pace Truck and Diehl Auto Group Safety Truck will be on display at Kennywood on Sunday!

“Two Back to Backs and a Four Bagger on Week #4 at 250 Speedway.

What a spectacular night of racing at “ Ohio’s Place to Sling Dirt”, and everyone should have been home to check out the 11:00 news. Unusually, repeat winners dominated the headlines, but each driver had to work for their spot in victory lane. Fifty Six machines were pit side on a beautiful Friday night in mid May.

The second feature of the evening was the 15 lap Pure Stock feature. Heat race winners DJ Hores in the #43 and Rich Frohnaple in the #80 brought the field to the green flag. Frohnaple was able to move the #80 out front in the early going with Hores right on his tail. After a caution on lap three, the #81 of last weeks feature winner Tony Paynter was on the move from his tenth starting position. In the heat race he had a future place kicker for the University of Notre Dame, Jack Derringer in the car. Because of the driver change, that put Paynter at the tail end of the field, but by lap #5 he had diced his way thru the field and snatched the lead away from Frohnaple. Bad luck struck the #80 as he had a right rear wheel come off the car in turn #1 on lap ten. After the restart Paynter was able to distance himself from Hores and pick up the back to back victory. Following the Dresden, OH driver in the Paynter Garage, QuickTime Performance Parts, Dinger & Sons Welding sponsored #81 was Hores, Justin VanFossen, Matt Wallick and Mike Powell.

Next up was the 20 lap TSMA Modified main event. Heat race winners “Stormin” Norman Aronhalt in the “Phantom” #309 and Ryan West in the #9 brought the field down for Chief Starter Keith Decker’s green flag. West was able to move out front and after a couple early cautions, we had a great battle between the top three drivers. Aronhalt continued to try the bottom side of the race track to get by the leader and heat race #3 winner Scott Stiffler in the #14 was sitting in third, waiting on one of the top two to flinch. Just after the halfway mark, “Stormin” Norman was finally able to find enough bite on the bottom and made the pass for the top spot. Unfortunately for Stiffler, mechanical problems forced him pit side once again this season after a strong showing in the early going the last three weeks. As West continued to stalk the leader, the #58 of Joe Gabrielson was filling up his mirror. Once the #58 and #9 started battling for the runner up spot, Aronhalt was able to start inching away. The battle for the second spot turned into a one man show after bad luck struck the #9 machine after a very strong, impressive performance. As the laps wound down, Gabrielson was unable to do anything with Norm as he was able to pick up the double this week as well. Following the Warsaw, OH driver in the Starbust Vinyl Graphics, Wyler Enterprises sponsored “Phantom” #309 was Gabrielson, Mitch Basich, Rob Melzer and “Hard Charger” Randy Bauknecht up from his 12 th starting spot to round out the top 5.

The fourth feature of the evening was the 4-Cylinder 15 lapper. Heat race winners Scotty Bush in the #95, looking to continue his undefeated streak in 2010, had the #28 of Jimmy Orr along side in the front row. Orr was able to race out front and had a different agenda than second place runner Bush. Orr was looking for that first feature win of the season and was driving a perfect race. The #28 was glued to the middle and Bush kept peaking to the inside, looking to take over the position. The front two were able to pull away slightly until Bush’s patients paid off. Going down the back stretch with four to go, Bush put his racer in the outside lane and completed the pass off turn four. After that, he checked out, leaving Orr to fall into a battle with the #12 of Kevin Davis, which he would eventually win. Bush was able to remain undefeated and pick up the “4-bagger” going away. Following the Massillon, OH driver in the Discount Tire Outlet of Massillon sponsored #95 was Orr, Davis, Mike Seifert and Robert Frohnaple, all the way up from the 11 th starting position.

The opening feature of the evening was the 8 lapper for the Mini Wedge division. Despite the low car count, they once again put on a good show for the fans and this division is looking at having its National Event right here at 250 Speedway with more information to follow in the upcoming weeks. On to the racing action, heat race winner Dakota Hess in the #11H found himself on the pole with the #4 of Phillip Bubeck along side. At the drop of the green flag Hess was able to race out front, but the #15 was on the charge. Unable to make the call for the heat race, Brady Reed had to start at the tail of the field. He was able to pick his way thru the field and pick up the top spot from Hess on lap three. The cars got strung out over the final few circuits and Reed was able to pick up another feature win at the “Wide Oval”. Following the St. Clairsville, OH driver in the Dairy Queen of St. Clairsville, Tweed’s Trucking, Special Thanks to the Eaton Family sponsored #15 was Hess, Bubeck and Susie”Q” Rudolph. Noah Stewart had problems in the heat and was unable to make the feature.

The Final feature of week #4 was the Super Sport 15 Lapper and it was a good one. Once again, this division continues to put on some of the best racing. Heat race winners Chris Seifert in the #16 and Sam Clegg in the #2 brought the field down for the start. Clegg was able to make his way into the lead with Glen Richea in the #77R right behind. The battle for the top spot was fierce. The #77R looked high and low but in the early going the Clegg machine was too strong. Clegg was able to run right in the middle of the race track until his car developed a very slight push at the exit of the corners. Just a little handling issue was all Richea needed when he made the move of the night and maybe the season on lap nine. Going into turn three he set up the #2 as he positioned his machine to the outside. Just when you thought he would look to make the move upstairs, Ritchea knew with a slight push, Clegg would drift high at the exit of the corner, so he slung his #77R to the bottom and put the perfect “slide job” on the Clegg machine. The spectacular move would steal the thunder from Clegg and Glen was able to pull away. The #2 machine was able to hold on to second despite the handling issue and the late charge by last weeks feature winner Mike Phillips Jr. in the #11TEEN. Following the Valley Grove, WVA driver in the QuickTime Performance, Orums Auto Body of Tridelphia, WVA sponsored #77R to the stripe was Clegg, “Hard Charger” Phillips from his 8 th starting spot, Kyle Warner in his first race of the season and Tory Gibbs.

Please come out and join us this Friday Night at 250 Speedway where the “Rough Rider’s” Steel Block Late Model’s will make their initial visit to the “Wide Oval”, battling for the $1500 top prize. TSMA Modified’s, Super Sports, Pure Stocks and 4-Cylinders will all be in action, you don’t want to miss this show!!! Racing Action Starts At 8:00. Visit 250speedway.com or ohiovalleydtr.com for more news and information on “ Ohio’s Place to Sling Dirt”.

HARTFORD, Ohio (May 15, 2010) – Broc Martin jumped out of his car and onto the 83m machine following the 410 Gibson Insurance Sprint Feature as part of the 6 PAK Saturday at Sharon Speedway. It was his first win at the 3/8-mile dirt oval. “I told myself all winter, I wanted one win here, one time,” the Wooster teen told announcer Jim Pollock following the race, reminiscing about watching the races, wondering what it'd be like to win. Martin was followed by Russ Sansoti (Struthers, Ohio), Jack Sodeman Jr. (North Jackson, Ohio), Cary Edwards (Columbiana, Ohio) finished out the top five in a cloud of smoke. Sodeman and Aaron Shaffer (Oak Park, Illi.) were the night's heat winners.

Victory At Hagerstown Speedway Gives Richards Sweep Of World of Outlaws
Late Model Series East Coast Doubleheader

HAGERSTOWN, MD - May 15, 2010 - Josh Richards was victorious in Saturday night's 29th annual 'Conococheague 50' at Hagerstown Speedway, giving him a sweep of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series's East Coast doubleheader.

The national tour's defending champion was nearly perfect in earning back-to-back triumphs, both worth $10,675. He led every lap of Thursday night's 'First State 50' at Delaware International Speedway and all but one circuit of Saturday's 50-lap A-Main at Hagerstown, a half-mile oval where he's raced often during his seven-year career. Richards, 22, of Shinnston, W.Va., lost the top spot to Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., on lap 18 of the Conococheague 50 but regained it the following tour. He controlled the remainder of the distance behind the wheel of his father Mark's Seubert Calf Ranches Rocket car, keeping Francis at arm's length en route to his series-leading fourth win of 2010. "We had an awesome weekend," said Richards, the WoO LMS points leader and only driver with more than one tour victory after 14 events on this season's 48-race schedule. "We were able to qualify good both nights, run good in the heats, start from the outside pole twice and stay up front in clean air. We couldn't ask for things to go any better."

Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., finished second in his PRC Rocket machine, 0.718 of a second behind Richards after overtaking Francis with an outside move off turn four on the final lap. Francis settled for third in his Valvoline Rocket – his second consecutive show-position finish – after starting from the pole and running second for virtually the entire event. There was also a last-lap pass for fourth place, which Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., claimed by slipping past Nick Dickson of Lewistown, Pa. The move earned Covert, who started 11th in Barry Klinedinst's Rocket, the $500 WoO LMS 'Bonus Bucks' cash for being the highest-finishing driver who hasn't won a tour A-Main and isn't among the top 12 in the points standings and forced Dickson, who started seventh in his father's Rocket car, to be satisfied with a career-best WoO placing of fifth.

Richards captured his second career WoO LMS A-Main at Hagerstown, finally returning to Victory Lane at the Frank Plessinger-promoted facility nearly three years after his initial triumph on July 21, 2007. It was his 24th career win on the tour since 2004, moving him closer to Francis's all-time best total of 27 wins. Francis, of course, proved to be Richards's strongest challenger. Francis managed to sneak ahead to lead lap 18, but he couldn't stay in front and ultimately saw his hopes hampered by the three caution flags that flew during the race's middle stages. "I didn't really know where I had to be in lapped traffic and Francis got by me (for the lead) because I was kinda messing around in the middle," said Richards, whose car was powered by a Jack Cornett engine. "But luckily we were able to get back in front of him. He slipped up off the corner, and I was able to turn underneath of him. We were actually fortunate to have cautions come out when they did," he continued. "My tires got hot (during extended green-flag periods), and then it seemed like my car would push worse and worse. Those cautions helped us cool the tires, get regrouped and figure out what we needed to do."

The slowdowns were a killer to Francis, who appeared ready to turn up the pressure on Richards just before each yellow flag was displayed. "I didn't need them cautions," said Francis, the 2007 WoO LMS titlist. "I felt like our car was a little better on long runs and Josh was better on firing off (on restarts) for some reason. It's all would of-could of-should of, but I feel like we were moving in on Josh every time the caution came out. Who knows if we would've been able to pass him, but I think we had a good shot." Francis, 42, ultimately lost second to Lanigan exiting turn four with the checkered flag flying. Lanigan came on strong late in the distance, exploding from 11th place on lap 20 to fourth just 12 circuits later. It took him until lap 42 to get by Dickson for third, however, and he only had enough time left to grab second from Francis. "We were too tight at the start, but we got better and better," said Lanigan, the 2008 WoO LMS champion. "We were coming. It would've been close if we had a few more laps (to run down Richards)."

Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., started 19th and finished sixth, falling one spot in the final rundown on lap 47 after he ran out of racing room in turn one as he attempted to pass Dickson for fourth. Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., moved up slightly from the 10th starting spot to claim seventh, followed by J.T. Spence of Winchester, Va., who ran as high as fifth, WoO LMS rookie Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del., and 22nd-starter Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y. Each of the race's three caution flags was triggered by a WoO LMS regular, beginning on lap 20 when 2006 champion Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., pulled his Sweeteners Plus Rocket to a stop on the inside of the homestretch while running sixth. McCreadie was in pain when he jumped out of his cockpit because hot fluid from a leaking oil line splashed on his right leg, but he did not suffer a significant burn. McCreadie did not continue racing, leaving him with a 24th-place finish that dropped him to third in the points standings, 70 points behind Richards. He entered the Delaware/Hagerstown double-dip as the points leader but experienced mechanical trouble in both events. Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., meanwhile, slowed on lap 31 while running ninth due to a broken power-steering pump, and Rick Eckert of York, Pa., retired after a broken rearend forced him to fall off the pace on lap 39 while holding fifth place.

A field of 37 cars was signed in for the program, which was contested on a brilliant, clear spring evening. Eckert established a new track record in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blistering the oval in 18.096 seconds (99.469 mph). He erased Billy Moyer's nearly five-year-old mark of 18.097 seconds. Heat winners were Eckert, Marvin Winters of McConnellsburg, Pa., who pulled up lame with an expired engine after taking the checkered flag and was forced to start the A-Main at the rear of the field in Ronnie DeHaven Jr.'s car, Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., and McCreadie. The B-Mains were captured by Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., and Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.

Mark Banal and John Mollick (and pit crews) win UFo/ULMS F-2 Shockwave events at P.P.M.S.!

Pittsburgh, PA (May 16, 2010) - Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway hosted the UFo Race Championship and the United Late Model Series on Saturday night for the running of the F2 Shockwave.  Mark Banal from St. Clairsville, Ohio bounced back from his own earlier problems and took advantage of John Mollick's misfortune in winning the first 22 lap event.  Mollick, from Toronto, Ohio, recovered from mechanical problems while leading the first race to win the second 22 lap event.  Both drivers received tremendous support from their pit crews, as each driver overcame misfortune to enjoy victory.

When Mark Banal suffered a flat right front tire and smacked the outside wall during hot laps, many thought that his evening was done.  However, in the limited amount of time between this incident and the start of the first heat race, Banal and his crew made repairs to his car.  Lining up eighth on the starting grid, Banal watched Chad McClellan and John Mollick lead the first F2 Shockwave event to the green flag.  An early tangle forced a complete restart, and Mollick grabbed the early lead before caution periods on laps 3 and 4, both for tangles between Lynn Geisler and Keith Barbara.   When racing resumed, it was Mollick showing the way, with Banal, Mike Johnson, Brent Rhebergen, and Brandon Burgoon taking up the chase.  Burgoon took fourth from Rhebergen on lap 7, and began to battle Johnson for third.  Mollick and Banal had their own battle for the lead.  By the halfway mark, the race for the lead was hotly contested.  Banal stuck a nose inside of Mollick on lap 14, but Mollick was able to keep control of the lead.  On lap 19, failed rear end gears struck down Mollick, as his slowing car forced the final caution period of the event.  Banal led the remaining distance to win the event over seventh starting Johnson, 11th starting Burgoon, fifth starting Rhebergen, and Tony Musolino from 14th.  Tommy Beck, Ben Miley, Garrett Krummert, Dave Wade, and Jim Lepro completed the top ten.  Miley's run from 19th starting spot to seventh earned him the Pass-Maximum award, presented by Bernheisel Race Components and Lazer Chassis.

In victory lane following the first event, winner Banal drew a 13 for the invert for the second F2 Shockwave.  Finishing lucky 13th in the first event was anything but lucky for John Mollick.  But his crew worked successfully to make repairs to his car, as he lined up on the pole position and pulled ahead of Danny Mitchell at the drop of the green flag.  Second place running Jim Lepro spun in turn two on lap 1, and the field behind did a great job of avoiding contact with his spinning car on the first of three caution periods.  Mollick led Dave Wade and Ben Miley to lap 6, when Tony Musolino spun in turn four for the second yellow Mollick continued to show the way on the restart, as second was now hotly contested.  Miley grabbed second from Wade, as Keith Barbara followed into third on lap 7.  Barbara, who had started last in the 16-car field, moved to second on lap 9 before a safety caution on lap 10 when a car spun in traffic but was able to keep moving.  Mollick and Barbara raced hard for the lead over the closing laps.  However, Mollick made all of the right moves through race traffic as he went on to post the victory.  Barbara's run from 16th to second earned the Pass-Maximum award, presented by Bernheisel Race Components and Lazer Chassis.  From 11th starting spot, Brandon Burgoon raced home third, giving him two third place finishes for the night in the season for the defending PPMS track champion.  Miley was fourth, after starting seventh.  Fifth went to eighth starting Tommy Beck, as Tony Musolino, Mike Johnson, Garrett Krummert, Dave Wade, and Mark Banal filled the top ten.

Heat race wins for the 22 entries were won by Keith Barbara and Brandon Burgoon.  Steve Baker and Jim Stephans each suffered engine problems in hot laps, which ended their evenings.  John Flinner also suffered engine problems at the checkered flag of his heat race, which ended his night.
John Mollick leads the UFo Race Championship point standings, by five points over Chad McClellan.  Keith Barbara is third in points, with Jared Miley, Tony Musolino, Tommy Beck, Denton Boyer, Doug Eck, Greg Oakes, and John Flinner rounding out the top ten, as the Series champion will tentatively earn $5000

Defending Champ Jimmy Mars Heads Ever-Building Entry List For Fourth Annual Firecracker 100 On June 24-26 At Lernerville Speedway

After Thrilling Charge From Rear To Win One Year Ago, Wisconsin Driver Eyes New Expanded Format Of Summer Spectacular

SARVER, PA – May 25, 2010 – Jimmy Mars authored one of the most stirring big-money performances of the 2009 season when he roared back from a mid-race pit stop to win the Firecracker 100 presented by GottaRace.com at Lernerville Speedway. The Menomonie, Wis., star would prefer to run a less-stressful road to Victory Lane when he returns to the western Pennsylvania track for the bigger-and-better fourth annual World of Outlaws Late Model Series mega-event on June 24-26. But if he learned anything from his memorable drive one year ago, it's that nothing is impossible on the spectacular four-tenths-mile oval. "I think that track is awesome," Mars said of the finely-prepared Lernerville Speedway. "There's a lot of tracks where you know you're in trouble when you don't start up front or you get a flat and have to go to the rear, but not there. I was able to come from the back and win because I could drive all over that place to try and make things happen."

Mars, 38, heads the ever-growing entry list for the 2010 Firecracker 100 weekend, which has expanded to a three-day festival of speed and fun for the first time. A pair of complete WoO LMS preliminary programs topped by 30-lap A-Mains paying $6,000 to win will be featured on Thurs., June 24, and Fri., June 25, helping to set the lineups for an action-packed card on Sat., June 26, that includes heat races, B-Mains, the $3,000-to-win 'Uncle Sam 30' Non-Qualifiers' Race and the prestigious Firecracker 100 with a $30,000 first-place prize. The exciting new format has a big booster in Mars, who is part of a talent-laden pre-registration roster that includes former WoO LMS champions Josh Richards, Darrell Lanigan, Steve Francis, Tim McCreadie, Scott Bloomquist (inaugural Firecracker 100 in 2007) and Billy Moyer; Outlaw travelers Chub Frank, Rick Eckert, Tim Fuller, Brady Smith, Shane Clanton, Clint Smith, Austin Hubbard, Russell King, Brent Robinson and Jill George; '08 Firecracker 100 victor Brian Birkhofer; and western Pennsylvania standouts such as Alex Ferree, Lynn Geisler, Gregg Satterlee and Matt Lux. "I really like this new deal with the preliminary nights," Mars said of the Firecracker 100 schedule enhancement that provides more all-out racing for fans and teams. "I think all crown-jewel events should have a preliminary-night format. With a regular two-day show you're so intense just trying to get into the feature because you know it's tough to have only one shot at making it, but with preliminary nights you have more time to learn something and you're not so worried about going home with nothing if you have a problem."

Mars experienced the disappointment of a fruitless 800-mile trip to Lernerville for the Firecracker 100, failing to qualify for the 2008 edition after being involved in a heat-race incident. But he roared back in impressive fashion last year, pulling off a dramatic rally to capture the first of the unprecedented four $30,000-plus victories he recorded during his amazing 2009 season. A flat left-rear tire on lap 27 of last year's Firecracker 100 set the stage for Mars's thrilling comeback. He had already advanced from the 18th starting spot to eighth place when he slowed and then headed to the pit area, but who knew he would be able to restart at the rear and still win the race?
"At the time I got the flat I was kind of riding," recalled Mars. "I was letting everything spread out, trying to be conservative. I might have taken it too easy because I got run over (and cut a tire). When I went back out I definitely was more aggressive. I knew that being so far back my chances of getting lapped were greater, so I sort of forced the issue a little bit more. And the racetrack came to my liking," he continued. "It sealed over – got rid of the cushion and the traction on the bottom. There was no distinct groove, and I had a car that I could put anywhere."

Mars completed his charge with the race winding down, passing longtime leader Lanigan on lap 94 and marching on to hoist the unique Firecracker 100 trophy in Victory Lane. He earned a total of $30,950 for his first career win on the WoO LMS. "It was definitely one of the most memorable wins I ever had," said Mars, who went on to win three races with $50,000 first-place checks – the USA Nationals at his home state's Cedar Lake Speedway, the North-South 100 and the Dirt Track World Championship – during the 2009 season. "There were a lot of things we had to overcome, and it was kind of the springboard that got us rolling last year."

Barring any accidents during the next month of racing, Mars plans to enter this year's Firecracker 100 behind the wheel of the same MB Customs car he drove to victory in '09. He's already looking forward to defending his Firecracker 100 title and partaking in some of the pre- and post-race activities that have become a trademark of the weekend, including concerts following the programs on Thursday and Friday; a driver/fan horseshoes tournament, weenie roast and Ms. Firecracker pageant on Saturday afternoon; an enormous autograph session under the grandstand prior to Saturday night's first green flag; and a pulsing display of pyro to send off the 100-lapper's field. "It's more than a race – it's an event," Mars said of the Firecracker 100. "You have a great race on a great track, plus you have the camaraderie of the racers and the fans all weekend. I like to have a beer after the races and hang out with the fans, and that's something you see (at Lernerville). It's definitely a fan-friendly event. People can come over and talk to the racers and have a good time."

Advance tickets to the Firecracker 100 presented by GottaRace.com are now on sale and can be purchased now by clicking on the 'Buy Tickets Now!' link at www.lernerville.com or by calling the speedway office at 724-353-1511 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

7th Annual 'Dickson Classic' for TSMA modifieds share card at WVMS's RACEFEST
As part of the 6th annual RACEFEST weekend of speed, Mountain State Motorsports Promotions proudly presents the 7th Annual 'Dickson Classic' for the open wheel modifieds.
Sanctioned for the 2nd consecutive year by the Tri-State Modified Association, the 2009 version set a record for competitors with over 50 of the Tri-State area's finest modified teams signing in to add their name into the race's growing reputation.Parkersburg, WV's Ken Riddle beat sentimental favorite Mark Dickson in a photo finish for the 2009 title, and will be considered a favorite to defend his win in an always competitive race that has yet to see a repeat winner. "The modifieds always put on an outstanding show at the Speedplant" said MSMP's Daniel Patterson.  "As a class, we've always believed the modifieds are generally overlooked in this area, and have tried to feature the division whenever possible". The 'Dickson Classic' was born from that dedication to the modified division.  When the well known racing families elder statesman Paul Dickson and his wife Ellenora, both staunch supporters of the modified class, passed away in 2003,the BDS promotional team asked the couple's children if Dickson name could be used to memorialize the couple through a modified special. "We were all gratified for Mom & Dad to be remembered by this race, but we're also glad that it's a big race for all the modified racers. It's an opportunity for a nice pay day and a chance to headline the class in what's become an annual race" said eldest son and modified racer Mark Dickson.   With the race purse and prestige growing since it's inception, 2010 see's a change in venue expected to increase both.  For the first time in the 'Dickson Classic's 6 year history, the area's largest paying modified event moves to the West Virginia Motor Speedway.  This move to the area's biggest stage is anticipated to bring an even larger and more competitive field of cars. The Sunday night running of the 7th Annual 'Dickson Classic' will be preceded by a Saturday night 'tune up' race paying $1000 to the winner, as a double header is on tap for both the World of Outlaw Late Models and TSMA modifieds.  The Sunday night modified headliner boasts a whopping $12,050 purse, with $3000 being the winner's share.  Both nights will see 24 car feature starting fields, allowing the largest starting field in the events history.    With nearly $17,000 up for grabs in the Memorial weekend modified double header features alone, the 'Dickson Classic' promises the elite of modified racing will make the perfect compliment to the World of Outlaw Late Models in the much heralded 'RACEFEST' 2010!     On Saturday ('Dickson Classic' tune up race)
