DIRTcar Summer Nationals: Moyer Masters Hell Tour Opener at Brownstown Speedway
Posted Thursday, Jun 17, 2010 - Brownstown, IN - Billy Moyer obviously wanted to remind people Wednesday night at Brownstown Speedway that he can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime. The Batesville, Ark., driver fresh off his Dream XVI victory last weekend at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio rolled through the Brownstown pit gate and on to win the opening night of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals 'Hell Tour' over 49 other DIRTcar Late Model competitors. Moyer, a DIRTcar Late Model Hall of Famer, traded the second spot with fourth-finishing Greg Johnson early, before searching out multiple grooves at the Jackson County oval, and sneaking under eventual runner-up Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., on lap 26 to claim the $5,000 winner's check. Greenbriar, Ark., driver Jack Sullivan would finish third ahead of Johnson while 2009 Brownstown Speedway Summer Nationals winner Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., would round out the top five.

Thursday June 17, 2010 at Kankakee Illinois
Kankakee, IL - June 17, 2010 - Billy Moyer was his typical "Mr. Smooth" self on Thursday night at Kankakee County Speedway.
For the second night in a row and the second year in a row at Kankakee, the Batesville, Ark. driver bested a strong contingent of 48 DIRTcar Late Model standouts over 40-laps to claim the $5,000 winner's check. "The car's nice and consistent. Believe it or not, we keep playing with little things every night", said Moyer. "I'm still tinkering with little things and it seems like we get a little bit better."
Moyer started 3rd and held his position through the first half of the events before making a move to steal second from Bloomington, Ill., driver Jason Feger. Moyer quickly moved in on then leader Frank Heckenast Jr. of Orland Park, Ill., and disposed of him with 17 circuits remaining. Feger would follow Moyer past Heckenast with 13 laps to go and charge towards the front only to settle for second. Heckenast would wind up third while Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark., finished fourth and Moweaqua, Ill. driver Shannon Babb rounded out the top five.

Moyer Makes it 3 in a Row on Masters Night 1!
DirtonDirt.com
NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (June 18) — Just before Friday’s UMP DIRTcar Summernationals feature at Cedar Lake Speedway, front-row starter Shannon Babb and eighth-starting Billy Moyer talked about their fortunes for the 40-lap feature.
“We were just talking about our car setups and stuff back and forth a little bit,” Moyer said, "and he said, ‘If you get up there to me, my weak spot is right over there (in turn two).’ ”
Sure enough, the red-hot Moyer cut Babb’s quarter-track lead to nothing over a 15-lap stretch, then made the winning pass exiting turn two with six laps remaining and cruised the rest of the way. The 52-year-old Hall of Famer from Batesville, Ark., earned $5,000 and stayed perfect on the Summernationals with his third straight victory following triumphs Wednesday in Brownstown, Ind., and Thursday in Kankakee, Ill.
Moyer, the all-time winningest Summernationals driver with 75 career victories, posted his seventh winning streak of three or more series races and is halfway to matching his 1994 record of winning the first six series events.Cedar Lake hadn’t hosted a Summernationals event in 14 years, and it had been even longer (16 years) since Moyer won at the 3/8-mile oval where he piled up big victories in the late 1980s and early ‘90s.
“We have been on a dry spell up here. We used to have a pretty good handle on it, and it kind of got away from us,” said Moyer, a five-time USA Nationals winner at Cedar Lake. "That’s why we came back up here right now. We’ve been working on this new car, and I think we’ve got everything going our way right now.”
Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., started outside the front row and outjumped polesitter Eric Pember of Pittsville, Wis., at the outset, building a full straightaway lead by the 15th lap while Pember had his hands full with Moyer and Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio. By the time Moyer worked past Pember, Babb had a quarter-track margin.Moyer was within a straightaway on lap 25, within a half-straightaway on lap 30 and gaining fast when Babb slipped in turn two on lap 32. Moyer made the winning pass on lap 35, diving into turn three under Babb. “He went by me like I was standing still,” Babb said. Lapped traffic late in the race gave Babb a chance to answer Moyer, but he couldn’t mount a challenge in settling for second.
Hometown driver and fast qualifier Pat Doar finished third while Pember, who ran second for 18 laps, ended up fourth ahead of Miller. Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, advanced 11 positions to finish sixth.
The race was slowed once for a first-lap caution that turned into a red flag after a tangle down the backstretch that sent sixth-starting Adam Hensel into the backstretch wall. The slowing Hensel collected Zach Johnson with Bub McCool, Jeep Van Wormer and Dennis Erb Jr. getting a piece of the action. Johnson’s car received the most damage after sliding underneath before the cars came to a rest on the high side entrance to turn three.

Saturday June 19, 2010 Night two at Cedar Lake Wisconsin
Vaught Light at Scale- Birkhofer Handed Win on Night 2 of Masters!
By: DirtonDirt.com
NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (June 19) — Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, inherited Saturday's UMP DIRTcar Summernationals victory at Cedar Lake Speedway after apparent flag-to-flag winner Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., weighed in 13 pounds below the 2,300-pound minimum. The polesitting Vaught led all 40 laps of the fourth leg of the 29-race series, but after going through a victory lane celebration, he was disqualified moments later at the scales. Birkhofer’s $10,000 victory ended the three-race win streak of Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who lost power on the 10th lap with a broken powerplant while running ninth. “I don't really want the trophy. I'll take that extra five-grand, though," Birkhofer said. "Will Vaught drove a good race. He had the best car.”
Vaught was in firm control most of the race, but the front-row starting Birkhofer turned up the heat with 10 laps remaining, nearly pulling alongside. But after a lap-32 caution, Vaught led comfortably the rest of the way, but his trip to victory lane ended up being premature. Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., was moved up to second in the final rundown followed by Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., and Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill. Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio, rounded out the top five in the 40-lap feature.Sixth-starting Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill ran as high as third and challenged Birkhofer for second on lap 32, but slowed with engine problems on lap 38.
Cautions appeared on lap 10 (Moyer's engine), lap 11 (Bub McCool's turn-two spin), lap 32 (for a slowing Jimmy Mars) and lap 38 (Babb). Vaught's disqualification eliminated his richest career victory and his second career Summernationals victory. His first Summernationals victory came June 18, 2008, at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.

Jeep Jets to Vermillion Victory
DANVILLE, Ill. (June 21) - Rebounding from a bitter breakdown while leading a night earlier, Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., led all 40 laps Monday at Vermilion County Speedway to capture the sixth leg of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. Van Wormer, who also won in Danville in 2008, earned $5,000 for his 12th career Summer Nationals victory. He turned back an early challenge by fifth-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., who appeared to edge ahead just before a lap-13 caution for a turn-four scramble. The yellow flag reset the field with Van Wormer on the point, and he was never headed again. Outside front-row starter Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., the three-time and reigning series champion, finished second for his first top-five finish on the tour. He fought off challenges from third-finishing Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., while Feger fell back to fifth behind Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., in the closing laps.

Erb Attacks for Macon Hell Tour Triumph
Macon, IL - July 8, 2010 - Dennis Erb Jr. knows to make the most of opportunities presented to him as he did Thursday night at Macon Speedway during race 20 of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour. The defending Hell Tour champion, Erb climbed from his 12th starting spot to sneak below then leader and 2009 Herald & Review winner Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., with three laps remaining in the 100-lap feature event to claim his second win of the 2010 Summer Nationals Tour worth $5,000. The win extends the point lead for Erb over second place finisher Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., who entered the night only 23 markers behind Erb in the point standings. Babb would settle for third, a rebound of sorts for the driver who lead the tour point standings earlier in the year but has recently suffered a string of bad luck. Greenbriar, Ark., driver Jack Sullivan started seventh and worked his way forward to finish fourth while Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill. rounded out the top five.
Up next for the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is a visit to Tri-City Speedway on Friday July 9, 2010. In total the Hell Tour has traveled over 4,000 miles in the course of 22 nights. Feger Dominates for Tri-City Hell Tour Win
Pontoon Beach, IL - July 9, 2010 - Just like in 2009, Jason Feger was the man to beat Friday Night at Tri-City Speedway, the 21st stop of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour. The Bloomington, Ill., native started early in the evening capturing quick-time honors overall and never relented. Feger, the 2009 DIRTcar Late Model National Champion would then dominate his heat race on his way to leading all 40-laps of the feature where he lapped everyone outside the top five. Feger's repeat performance of his first ever Hell Tour victory earned him $10,000. Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., would climb from sixth to second early but never challenge for the lead as Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., finished third, his second straight third place performance. Current DIRTcar Summer Nationals point leader Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., would finish fourth allowing Feger to cut 15 points from his lead heading into the final seven races. Brian Shirley would climb from his 10th place starting spot to round out the top five.

Babb Dominates at Fairbury; Feger Gains in Standings
Fairbury, IL - July 10, 2010 - Shannon Babb powered his way to a $10,000 victory on Saturday night at Fairbury American Legion Speedway, tightening the overall DIRTcar Summer Nationals standings entering the final week of Hell Tour action. While Babb was trying to hold off the field on the 22nd night of the Hell Tour, series leader Dennis Erb Jr. had a right rear tire go down late in the feature, dropping him to 14th. It was also costly in his quest for a fourth consecutive DIRTcar Summer Nationals crown. Jason Feger capitalized on Erb's misfortune and drove to a fourth-place finish. Feger now has a slim 10-point lead in the Summer Nationals standings after trailing Erb by 13 points entering Fairbury. Matt Miller was second on Saturday night, followed by Ryan Unzicker, Feger and Jeep Van Wormer.
Up next for the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is a visit to Quincy Raceways on Sunday July 11, 2010. In total the Hell Tour has traveled over 4,100 miles in the course of 25 nights. The trip from Fairbury, Ill., to Quincy Raceways in Quincy, Ill., will have drivers traveling over 210 miles west to the track, where feature winner Babb won in 2009.
Events at Spoon River Speedway (Monday), Peoria Speedway (Tuesday), Kokomo Speedway (Wednesday), Attica Raceway Park (Friday) and Oakshade Raceway (Saturday) are also left to decide who will be the 2010 DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour champion.

Quincy, IL - July 11, 2010 - Jeep Van Wormer didn't let his late arrival slow him down Sunday night at Quincy Raceways during the 23rd stop of the Hell Tour. The Pinconning, Mich., driver used an outside front row starting spot to put him in position to capitalize on Brian Shirley's engine woes early in the 40-lap main event. Van Wormer would never look back to claim his fourth DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory of 2010 worth $5,000. Surviving DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is Reward for Brandon Thirlby
PEORIA, IL - July 13, 2010 - The DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour isn't for the faint of heart. Starting June 16, the Dirt Late Model tour has wound its way through the Midwest, not even stopping to catch a breath for 19 consecutive race days. Very few have what it takes to survive the grueling schedule, much less compete against some of the best racers in the country day after day. Nearly 300 drivers have tried, but only 10 have taken to the track each of the 24 nights heading into the stretch run that begins tonight at Peoria (IL) Speedway. Defending DIRTcar Late Model champion Jason Feger has a slim lead over four-time defending Hell Tour champion Dennis Erb Jr. Chasing those two for the overall Hell Tour crown to be decided on Saturday at Oakshade Speedway in Wauseon, Ohio, are two-time Summer Nationals champion Shannon Babb, plus 15-time Summer Nationals race winner Jeep Van Wormer. Hoping to be at that level soon is Brandon Thirlby, a native of Traverse City, Mich. Right now, Thirlby might be better known for racing hydroplane boats than racing DIRTcar Late Models, but he's looking to change that. He's an eight-time national champion on water, and now with a week left in the 2010 edition of the Hell Tour, Thirlby has not missed a race on dirt since June 16. He's battled, made bold moves and learned from some of the best in the business. He's 16th in points and knows he has a lot to learn, but there's no quit in him or his crew, which consists of his brothers. Still, making the adjustments to be successful is a challenge. "There's more stuff different than there is the same between racing boats and racing cars," said Thirlby, who turned 23 a couple of weeks before the Hell Tour started. "I guess go fast and turn left is the only thing that's same between the two of them. There are so many different changes you can make on these race cars." His passion for DIRTcar racing is evident. He's working on his car, learning how to tweak the setup each night with the help of his brothers. He's more than just a driver, which makes his effort on his inaugural Summer Nationals run even more impressive, even if he has yet to pull off a Top 10 finish. "There's so much you can learn from the people around you at these events," Thirlby said. "There are 20 of the best guys you're racing against every night, and I'd say 75 percent of them are willing to give you help every night." As much as the battle on the track can be intense, the mental aspect of surviving the grueling Summer Nationals schedule against fierce competitors can also be taxing. "The big question from everybody is am I getting disappointed," Thirlby said. "I came into the Summer Nationals knowing where we were as far as Erb and Feger and Babb. You just can't put yourself with those guys yet, you have to learn from them." Every night is obviously a lesson, but he is clearly determined to succeed. After taking two days off next week Thirlby will be back on the water for another two-week run of boat racing. But Thirlby believes this DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour has been the start of something bigger. "This has been the start of my full-time car racing career," he said. "From here on out you'll see me around the United States a lot more."
No doubt with a positive approach and the confidence knowing he survived one of the toughest tours in auto racing.

Sullivan Sails to Peoria Hell Tour Triumph
Peoria, IL - July 13, 2010 - Jack Sullivan earned his second Hell Tour victory the season on Tuesday night at Peoria Speedway, where the DIRTcar Summer Nationals competed for the 25th time in 27 days. Sullivan, of Greenbriar, Ark., jumped out to early lead over pole-sitter Frank Heckenast Jr., and then fended off multiple challenges from multiple angles thrown at him by Hell Tour point leader Jason Feger during the 40-lap main event. Sullivan, who also won at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway, collected $5,000 for winning. Feger finished a strong second, charging from his eighth-place starting spot to add a little more distance between himself and defending champion Dennis Erb Jr. in the DIRTcar Summer Nationals point standings. Monday night winner Ryan Unzicker was third, followed by Heckenast and Steve Lance Jr.
Up next for the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is a visit to the Hoosier state and Kokomo Speedway on Wednesday, July 14. In total the Hell Tour has traveled more than 4,500 miles in the course of 27 nights. The trip from Peoria, Ill., to Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind., will have drivers traveling over 230 miles east to the track which will serve as 26th race of the 2010 tour. Schlenk Gets First Hell Tour Victory at Kokomo
Kokomo, IN - July 14, 2010 - DIRTcar Late Model National points leader Rusty Schlenk took on the top three contenders in the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour Wednesday night at Kokomo Speedway and showed why he's on top of the nationwide standings. Schlenk fought off an assault from Jason Feger, Dennis Erb Jr., and Shannon Babb to capture the 26th night of competition and earn the first victory of his career during the grueling month-long tour. Schlenk, of Jackson, Mich., pocketed $5,000 for the victory and became the second driver in three nights to earn his first Summer Nationals victory after Ryan Unzicker won Monday night at Spoon River Speedway. Feger Takes Attica, Clinches First Hell Tour Crown
ATTICA, OH - July 16 - The pressure was clearly building around Jason Feger as the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour entered its championship weekend Friday night at Attica Raceway Park. Through 27 events in 30 days, Feger was atop the overall standings and seeking his first series crown.
After a grueling schedule throughout the Midwest, Feger decided enough was enough and took care of business Friday night, holding off Jeep Van Wormer over 40 laps at the 1/3-mile high-banked oval to earn his second Hell Tour victory. In doing so, Feger also clinched his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour championship, meaning Saturday at Oakshade Raceway will feature an incredible victory celebration as he tries to add one more win in the series finale after unseating three-time Hell Tour champion Dennis Erb Jr. "You feel every bump, every vibration, and all the noise with so much on the line," said Feger, 32, the 2009 DIRTcar Late Model national champion from Bloomington, Ill. "I'm just glad the pressure is off and we can get back to having fun.
"It means a lot to finally beat Dennis. He's been so good on this deal for so long. That guy is just so good and is always consistent. He and I race together a lot and we're both fierce competitors. It also feels really good being the first Bob Pierce race car to win a Summer Nationals. It's just a pretty awesome feeling right now."
It wasn't an easy victory as Feger was forced to withstand a deluge of challenges from Van Wormer. Surviving the grinding day-after-day schedule has its rewards. He collected $5,000 for winning at Attica, plus another $25,000 for the DIRTcar Summer Nationals crown. "It was a long 40 laps, especially until the last green flag stretch," Feger said. "I knew Jeep had a softer tire on the left than I did and he was firing really well down on the bottom on the restarts. I just needed a few laps to get going."
Van Wormer, of Pinconning, Mich., settled for second ahead of Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio.
Erb, of Carpentersville, Ill., was trying to win a fourth consecutive Summer Nationals title. He rallied from 15th to finish fourth ahead of travel mate Jason McBride of Carbondale, Ill.
The DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour wraps up Saturday with the annual Birthday Race at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. In total the Hell Tour has traveled more than 4,900 miles in the course of 30 nights. The trip from Attica Raceway Park to Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio, will have drivers traveling over 100 miles west to the track, which will serve as 28th race since the 2010 tour started on June 16.

Schlenk Nabs Oakshade Win; Feger Crowned Champion
WAUSEON, OH - July 17 - There was no catching Rusty Schlenk Saturday Night at Oakshade Raceway during the finale of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour. Fourth starting Schlenk followed outside polesitter Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville Ill., on the initial start of the 60-lap main event as the duo led the field on the initial lap. Schlenk, the current DIRTcar Late Model National point leader would then dispose of Erb just before the races midpoint and build over a full straight away lead on his closest competitor to capture the $10,000 winner's check. Greenbriar, Ark., driver and Hell Tour traveler Jack Sullivan climbed from his ninth-place starting spot to claim the runner up position just ahead of Ryan Unzicker of El Paso Ill., who himself rallied from a 14th starting spot to claim third. Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill., would finish fourth and home state hero Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio would round out the top five. 2009 DIRTcar Late Model National Champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., would officially add DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion to his resume with his ninth place finish at Oakshade. Feger had wrapped up the title a night earlier when he claimed the win at Attica Raceway Park in nearby Attica, Ohio putting an exclamation point on a furious late tour charge. Feger's championship comes on the strength of 18 top five finishes along with an impressive 22 top ten showings. The 32-year old driver had last finished outside the top ten at I-55 Raceway on July 3rd where he finished 15th. Since that day, Feger went on an impressive stretch run scoring two wins, four runner-up finishes, a third, and two fourth place finishes before the finale at Oakshade. In total the Hell Tour traveled more than 5,000 miles in the course of 32 nights. From here the stars of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour will switch their focus to the DIRTcar Late Model National point standings and competition at the vast array of DIRTcar sanctioned tracks throughout the country. Drivers will also have an array of major events still to compete in as well including the World 100 and DIRTcar UMP Nationals at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio and the second edition of the Party In Pevely at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.
